  • KM2.0: Business Knowledge Sharing in the Web 2.0 Age
  • This paper is intended to discuss the impact of Web 2.0 on knowledge management (KM) and the future orientation of KM. These days, the term KM is used rather less than hitherto. However, as Web 2.0 has made its debut and user participation-type culture has expanded, the new concept of “collective intelligence” has been attracting attention. Opinions are currently being advanced with regard to the concept and process of KM and the system architecture that can be used to implement it. This paper also deals with the issue of knowledge provision, a traditional issue of KM, and introduces a KM model in the context of the Web 2.0 age that can expand collective intelligence in a positive spiral by closely linking it to knowledge extraction from various communication tools and job systems. In his paper “What is Web 2.0” 1), which was announced in September 2005 and is currently attracting wide attention, Tim O’Reilly proposed the concept of Web 2.0. This concept is also exerting an important impact on the field of knowledge management (KM). The concept of KM became popular in early 1990’s, and many experts in business management made a large number of proposals in the domain of corporate education and knowledge creation and many managers and employees who were in sympathy with the concept conducted attempts in the field. Subsequently, the term KM became rather less popular as the 21st century began but the expansion of a user- participation type culture stimulated by Web 2.0 has brought the

  • Web 2.0 and beyond – changing the map, anywhere, any device
  • We have seen Web 2.0 technologies used to create new web GIS applications. In this paper Eamon Walsh, Chief Technology Officer for eSpatial examines technologies progressing the industry from the first Web 2.0 GIS applications. Key new capabilities include: • Annotating and updating spatial data rather than just viewing and searching, using “pure web” technologies rather than desktop GIS tools. • Data input from other consumer devices, such as cell phones. • Working with organizations’ own data (including large databases) rather than just points of interest on standard maps. Technologies considered include: • AJAX • Data input from cell-phones, including innovative mechanisms for determining location. Examples will be presented, including from a multi-disciplinary research project in this area - “ICING”, being carried out by a group including city governments, technology providers, and universities ( http://fp6-project-icing.eu ). We also look at how these capabilities are now moving from “mash-ups” to eGovernment and commercial systems, for both public access and internal use. Such systems range from “eCommunity” through to more traditional GIS areas such as Defense. In this we consider the requirements that prompted some organizations to move from sites based on “mash-ups” to systems built using commercial geospatial technology deployed in-house. • A Quick, Painless Tutorial on the Python Language
  • What Are Scripting Languages? Languages like C and C++ allow a programmer to write code at a very detailed level which has good execution speed (especially in the case of C). But in most applications, execution speed is not important, and in many cases one would prefer to write at a higher level. For example, for text-manipulation applications, the basic unit in C/C++ is a character, while for languages like Perl and Python the basic units are lines of text and words within lines. One can work with lines and words in C/C++, but one must go to greater effort to accomplish the same thing. The term scripting language has never been formally defined, but here are the typical characteristics: • Used often for system administration, Web programming, text processing, etc. • Very casual with regard to typing of variables, e.g. little or no distinction between integer, floating-point or string variables. Arrays can mix elements of different “types,” such as integers and strings. Functions can return nonscalars, e.g. arrays. Nonscalars can be used as loop indexes. Etc. • Lots of high-level operations intrinsic to the language, e.g. string concatenation and stack push/pop. • Interpreted, rather than being compiled to the instruction set of the host machine Why Python? The first really popular scripting language was Perl. It is still in wide usage today, but the languages with momentum are Python and the Python-like Ruby. Many people, including me, greatly prefer Python to Perl, as it is much cleaner and more elegant. Python is very popular among the developers
  • Google Earth Review Guide
  • Google Earth™ is Google’s satellite imagery-based mapping product that combines global coverage of imagery with new navigational features including integrated Google search capabilities. It is based on technology from Keyhole, a company acquired by Google in October 2004. Google Earth is a broadband mapping tool that enables users to fly from space to street level views to find geographic information, and to explore places around the world. Google Earth is a free downloadable application for personal use. Users can also choose to buy one of two paid services: a higher-end consumer version, Google Earth Plus is $20/year; Google Earth Pro, for professional and commercial use, is $400/year. The paid versions offer a variety of tools for measuring, drawing, saving, printing and GPS device support. Google Earth is available in English only at the present time. What differentiates Google Earth Part flight simulator, part search tool Most standard web-based map services make you click and wait for an illustration of a location to appear. But the Google Earth experience is measured in video metrics (frames per second), and the screen displays photo-realistic views taken from satellites. The fast, fluid flight enables free-form exploration of the globe. Users can zoom, tilt and rotate around whatever they see. Explore The combination of speed and photo-realistic images of the entire planet encourage people to explore places they didn’t know about before. And the beauty of the planet itself inspires inspection of volcanic lakes in Nicaragua, sand dunes in north Africa, and other landmarks across the globe. Search Google Earth fully integrates local
  • Linking Oracle Tables to Microsoft Access
  • The Forest Service has the capability to access data residing in Oracle and other databases with Office 2000. Microsoft Access is part of the Office 2000 suite and has a strong ability to “link” to tables in other databases including Oracle. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to configure a PC for the linkage and illustrate how to make the connection. The primary benefit of using Access to manipulate data is its rich interface to quickly design queries, reports, and forms for data entry. The connection is done through the use of a standard called Open Database Connectivity (ODBC). This is a specification for accessing relational database’s that has been in existence for many years. Two additional software packages must be installed on the PC in addition to Office 2000. The software required includes SQL*Net (an Oracle product) and an ODBC driver (supplied by many software vendors). These additional software packages are already installed on Round 12 corporate PC’s as part of the software image. To get the software for earlier round PC’s, you must have your System Administrator schedule your PC for a software distribution from Missoula OSE (contact your System Admin). ODBC drivers for Oracle are included with the Office 2000 installation as well as from the Oracle package distributed by Missoula OSE. Download pdf Linking Oracle Tables to Microsoft Access
  • TmoleX A Graphical User Interface to the TURBOMOLE Tutorial
  • The Windows version of TmoleX is distributed as a single executable file, called tmoleX.exe. To install TmoleX, simply double-click on tmoleX.exe and follow the installation instructions. After installation, TmoleX is available in your Windows Start Menu or as an icon on your desktop. In order to run TURBOMOLE calculations Perl must be installed on your system. We recommend to install ActivePerl on Windows, which is available for free from http://www.activestate.com/products/activeperl/. Note that you do not have to register, and please make sure that the path to Perl will be added to your global path settings (this is the default, simply do not deactivate it). Please Note : T URBOMOLE 5.9.1 for Windows is included in the TmoleX package. You will not have to install it additional ly. Some features of T URBOMOLE that are based on classical Unix scripts are not yet ported to Windows: 1. Numerical second derivatives (script NumForce) 2. automatic BSSE calculations (program jobbsse) The TURBOMOLE version for Windows includes one generic type of 32-bit executable only, without special optimization for a certain type of CPU. It runs on any processor that is compatible to the Pentium 4 instruction set which supports SSE2. If you want to run TURBOMOLE 'at full speed', we recommend to use the Linux version.
