Often a shape looks great on screen using max, but if you want to actually make it in 3d then it’s a bit tricky seeing as we don’t have access to a rapid prototyping machine or a CNC mill, but we do have a laser cutter. So this explains how to turn a 3d studio model into a real thing made up of laminates of card, paper, ply, Perspex whatever you want. This tutorial assumes a basic knowledge of 3DS Max an AutoCAD.

In this tutorial I will show you how to build a Car paint shader in Maya. Though this tutorial is for Maya, you may use similar concepts in other packages as well. The terms may be different. To create a car paint shader we will be using a layered shader. There will be two layers in this shader, one for the color and the other for the reflections and highlights. Think of it in terms of a real car paint. You have a base color and on top of it a clear coat which adds the gloss to the paint

Before modeling anything, it is important to gather and study good reference material. It is also helpful to create templates for use in your modelling program. A good underlay will provide the modeler with exact dimensions and subtle detail that might be overlooked if modeling from memory.

Using Dosch Textures

Using Dosch Textures in 3D Studio MAX
In order to properly use the textures in 3D Studio MAX please verify the location (drive-letter; e.g. D: or E:) where your image-maps are located. Then open the File/Configure-Paths page in 3DSM, switch to the “Bitmap”-section and enter the path to the IMAGE-folder on your CD-ROM at the “Configure-Paths” setting If the Raytracer fails to find a texture in any of the 3DSM-default folders, it now automatically searches through the extra locations defined in the “Configure- Paths” on the “Bitmap”-page.

This drawing is ready to use in AUTO-CODE. The part is positioned so that the lower left corner of the rectangle is at 1,1. The contours are drawn as polylines and the drill holes are drawn as circles. All the layers for dimensions and notes can be turned off to reduce the clutter or they may remain on while AUTO-CODE is running. For this tutorial we will be turning them off. In AutoCAD, select the layer control list and freeze the layers that are not used for programming the part.

The laser cutters can do many things, like cut and engrave (or score). There are some tips for preparing your laser files in AutoCAD at the end of this document. For more information on approved materials the laser cutters can cut and score please refer to the “Laser Resources – Materials and Suppliers” document. General safety information is contained in the “Laser Resources – Materials and Safety” document.

Using the Laser interface, this tutorial will step you through how to run AUTO-CODE in AutoCAD. This tutorial introduces subroutine programming and automatic leaders. The drawing is all set to be used in AUTO-CODE. The part is positioned so that the lower left corner of the drawing is at the zero point. The parts are shifted one-half inch in from the edges of the material. The inside cuts are drawn as closed polylines. The layer for dimensions can be turned off to reduce the clutter.
