  • SAML, developed by the Security Services Technical Committee of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), is an XML-based framework for communicating user authentication, entitlement, and attribute information. As its name suggests, SAML allows business entities to make assertions regarding the identity, attributes, and entitlements of a subject (an entity that is often a human user) to other entities, such as a partner company or another enterprise application. SAML is a flexible and extensible protocol designed to be used – and customized if necessary – by other standards. The Liberty Alliance, the Internet2 Shibboleth project, and the OASIS Web Services Security (WS-Security) committee have all adopted SAML as a technological underpinning for various purposes. SAML History SAML V1.0 became an OASIS standard in November 2002. SAML V1.1 followed in September 2003 and has seen significant success, gaining momentum in financial services, higher education, government, and other industry segments. SAML has been broadly implemented by all major Web access management vendors. SAML support also appears in major application server products and is commonly found among Web services management and security vendors. SAML V2.0 builds on that success. Many of these implementations have demonstrated successful interoperability at a series of events, the latest of which was held at the 2005 RSA Conference.   • Reflective programming is becoming popular due to the increasing set of dynamic services provided by execution environments like JVM and CLR. With custom attributes Microsoft introduced an extensible model of reflection for CLR: they can be used as additional decorations on element declarations. The same notion has been introduced in Java 1.5. The annotation model, both in Java and in C#, limits annotations to classes and class members. In this paper we describe C# a, an extension of the C# programming language, that allows programmers to annotate statements and code blocks and retrieve these annotations at run-time. We show how this extension can be reduced to the existing model. A set of operations on annotated code blocks to retrieve annotations and manipulate bytecode is introduced. We also discuss how to use C# to annotate programs giving hints on how to parallelize a sequential method and how it can be implemented by means of the abstractions provided by the run-time of the language. Finally, we show how our model for custom attributes has been realized. Reflection and dynamic loading are becoming essential elements of modern programs. Their usefulness is testified, for example, by the JDBC architecture that shows how to implement a driver-based architecture exploiting the Java dynamic loading. Although reflection can be used to inspect the structure of types, to access fields and even to invoke methods dynamically, the concept of tagging has been anticipated as an interesting application. Core GT components address basic issues relating to security, resource access and management, data movement and management, resource discovery, and so forth. A broader “Globus universe” comprises numerous tools and components that build on core GT4 functionality to provide many useful application- level functions. These tools have been used to develop many Grid systems and applications.   • Social networking websites have been steadily gaining popularity over the last few years. A recent OFCOM report (OFCOM, 2008) demonstrated that 22% of adults in the UK had registered with a social networking site (the figure is highest for 16-24 year olds and decreases with age). Facebook is, at present, the most visited social networking site and has over 130 million active users (Facebook, 2008a). This article shares the experiences of University of Wolverhampton’s pilot project into the use of Facebook pages for academic libraries. During 2007, we noticed that many of our students using PCs in the University of Wolverhampton Learning Centres were regular visitors of Facebook. Each member of the University is given a University e-mail address as well as access to our VLE, but from talking to students, I found that some were choosing to use Facebook as the platform to communicate with their cohort and organise group work. Academic staff had also started to use Facebook, mainly as a forum for social interaction within their classes but also as a way for students to communicate with them. Some libraries had been using Facebook to set up a profile for the library. However, Facebook regulations permitted this (profiles should be for individuals only) and many were closed. In November 2007, Facebook began Facebook Pages which is designed for businesses and organisations (including libraries) to create a presence. By creating a Facebook page rather than a profile, other Facebook members can become a “fan” and be sent updates via Facebook.
