  • Building Microsoft Windows Versions of R and R packages under Intel Linux
  • It is simple to build R and R packages for Microsoft Windows from an ix86 Linux machine. This is very useful to package developers who are familiar with Unix tools and feel that widespread dissemination of their work is important. The resulting R binaries and binary library packages require only a minimal amount of work to install under Microsoft Windows. While testing is always important for quality assurance and control, we have found that the procedure usually results in reliable packages. Instructions on cross-building come with the R source [1] in files such as INSTALL, readme.package, and Makefile under the directory src/gnuwin32/. However, it took us a substantial amount of time to get things worked out, and we thought it might be useful to share our experience by by presenting an explicit example. In this document, we intended to automate and illustrate steps for obtaining, installing, and using the cross-compilation tools. hoping that it might save people’s time. These steps have been put into a Makefile, which accompanies this document, for automating the process. The Makefile is available from the contributed documentation area on Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). The current version has been tested with R-2.1.0. For the impatient and trusting, if a current version of Linux R is in the search path, then make CrossCompileBuild will run all Makefile targets described up to the section, Building R Packages and Bundles. This assumes: (1) you have the Makefile in a directory RCrossBuild (empty except for the makefile), and (2) that ./RCrossBuild is

  • Deepening the Chasm: Web 2.0, Gaming, and Course Management Systems
  • During the past decade, a gap has appeared between higher education and the rest of the digital world. While academia has moved a great deal of content and activity into course management systems, the World Wide Web has developed a new architecture, usually dubbed “Web 2.0.” Around this time computer gaming has grown into a vital, global industry. Course management system(s) (CMS) have supported a very different world of computermediated communication, and nearly a decade of institutional and individual practice has deepened the difference. We argue that CMS are going to make some efforts to cross that chasm in the near future, but the overall gap is likely to persist. We can glimpse the chasm’s current depths by outlining these two recent cybercultural movements. First, at this point in the World Wide Web’s existence, the quantitative successes of Web 2.0 are wellknown. The blogosphere continues to double in size, now aiming for 100 million active blogs. The wiki world booms, from the rise of Google’s wiki platform (Google Docs) to Wikipedia’s steady expansion (2,389,339 articles in English, as of this writing). Podcasting also grows. According to one measure, 18.5 million people listened to podcasts in 2007, an amount likely to break 30 million by the end of this year. Web 2.0based social networking

  • Developing WebLogic Server Applications
  • This document is written for application developers who want to build WebLogic Server e-commerce applications using the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) from Sun Microsystems. It is assumed that readers know Web technologies, object-oriented programming techniques, and the Java programming language. WebLogic Server applications are created by Java programmers, Web designers, and application assemblers. Programmers and designers create modules that implement the business and presentation logic for the application. Application assemblers assemble the modules into applications that are ready to deploy on WebLogic Server. WebLogic Server implements Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) version 1.3 technologies (http://java.sun.com/j2ee/sdk_1.3/index.html). J2EE is the standard platform for developing multi-tier Enterprise applications based on the Java programming language. The technologies that make up J2EE were developed collaboratively by Sun Microsystems and other software vendors, including BEA Systems. WebLogic Server J2EE applications are based on standardized, modular components. WebLogic Server provides a complete set of services for those modules and handles many details of application behavior automatically, without requiring programming. J2EE defines module behaviors and packaging in a generic, portable way, postponing run-time configuration until the module is actually deployed on an application server. J2EE includes deployment specifications for Web applications, EJB modules, Enterprise applications, client applications, and connectors. J2EE does not specify how an application is deployed on the target server—only how a standard module or application is packaged. For each module type, the specifications define the files required and their location in the directory structure. Note: Because J2EE is backward compatible, you can still run J2EE 1.3 applications
