  • OpenOffice.org 1.0, ODBC, and MySQL How-to
  • The launch of OpenOffice.org 1.0 in 2002 removed at a stroke one major obstacle to the universal use of Linux on the desktop. At last, Linux users have office software - word processor, spreadsheet, graphics, and presentation - which not only works at least as well as the Microsoft Office equivalent, but can also use Microsoft Office file formats, and is genuinely open source. However, this hasn't prevented objections from Microsoft diehards that they still can't migrate to Linux, because "Linux hasn't anything like Microsoft Access". Well, have I got news for you. It has, and it's called OpenOffice.org 1.0. One of the hidden secrets of OpenOffice.org 1.0 is that it also has a great user-friendly database front end. All you need to do is wire it up to one of the many open-source databases on Linux, and you have a Microsoft Access (and more) equivalent. This document explains how to make this connection, and then provides a quick tour of the database tools within OpenOffice.org 1.0. Many hardened OpenOffice.org 1.0 users are completely unaware of what is hiding under the covers, and are amazed once they start playing with the 'hidden' tools. • Guide to Eos and Unity Computing for UNIX,Windows, and Linux
  • Guide to Eos and Unity Computing, 2007-08 Edition for UNIX, Windows, and Linux is the principal user manual for the distributed academic computing environment at North Carolina State University. Formerly a College of Engineering system only, Eos was made available to other NCSU colleges in 1996 in a project called Unity. Today, all NCSU students, faculty, and staff receive accounts on a fully merged campus-wide system, or realm, often referred to as Eos/Unity. The system's continuing expansion has required a new release of this guide annually. The guide was first written in 1991 as Eos: An Introduction. Two releases of Guide to the Eos Computing Environment followed in 1993 and 1994. In 1996, Eos and Unity were written about together for the first time in Guide to Eos and Unity Computing, followed by the 1997 edition. The all-UNIX environment changed with the inclusion of a Microsoft Windows platform, which was introduced in Guide to Eos and Unity Computing: 1998-99 Edition for UNIX and NT, followed by the 1999-2000 edition. Guide to Eos and Unity Computing: 2000-01 Edition for UNIX, NT, and Linux introduced the Red Hat Linux platform, which further diversified Eos/Unity. The Windows 2000 platform replaced NT in Guide to Eos and Unity Computing: 2001-02 Edition for UNIX, Windows, and Linux, and the 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06 (for Windows XP), and 2006-07 editions followed. The current guide, Guide to Eos and Unity Computing: 2007-08 Edition for UNIX, Windows, and Linux, is written in collaboration with staff from the College of Engineering’s

  • Teach Yourself JAVA in 21 Days
  • Java is an object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems, a company best known for its high-end Unix workstations. Modeled after C++, the Java language was designed to be small, simple, and portable across platforms and operating systems, both at the source and at the binary level (more about this later). Java is often mentioned in the same breath as HotJava, a World Wide Web browser from Sun like Netscape or Mosaic (see Figure 1.1). What makes HotJava different from most other browsers is that, in addition to all its basic Web features, it can also download and play applets on the reader’s system. Applets appear in a Web page much in the same way as images do, but unlike images, applets are dynamic and interactive. Applets can be used to create animations, figures, or areas that can respond to input from the reader, games, or other interactive effects on the same Web pages among the text and graphics. Although HotJava was the first World Wide Web browser to be able to play Java applets, Java support is rapidly becoming available in other browsers. Netscape 2.0 provides support for Java applets, and other browser developers have also announced support for Java in forthcoming products. • AutoCAD 2000 in 3D - A Monkish Shot Tower Tutorial Manual
  • This tutorial introduces the concepts and techniques used to build 3D models in AutoCAD 2000. As a vehicle for learning these techniques, we develop a model of a whimsical structure that I have called the Monkish Shot Tower after a group of imaginary Monks who have refined the technology of manufacturing lead shot for firearms, and the like. The tower is designed around the perfect number 7, features an external spiral stair, an elaborate canopy on top, and a hole down the centre. The final structure is illustrated in Figure 1 below. This tutorial will introduce the following concepts and techniques: • simple solid modelling with solid primitives & CSG operations (the tower); • construction of complex solid objects (stair and landing); • user coordinate systems and positioning of objects (external stairs); • advanced use of the CSG operations (tapering the stairs); • simple surface modelling (the roof canopy and handrails); • surface modelling versus solid modelling (the handrails); • meshed surfaces (the landing “sails” for shading). • Web 2.0 Ideas for Educators A Guide to RSS and More
  • RSS is an acronym that stands for Rich Site Summary, though it’s often alternatively defined as Really Simple Syndication. The simplest definition of RSS is an eXtensible Markup Language(XML) format that uses the Resource Description Framework (RDF) for representing information about resources on the World Wide Web. Similarly, Atom is another format based on XML technology. You might see buttons like these: There are a few types of feeds commonly found on web sites RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom. There is quite a bit of debate about which type of xml format is better, but for the purpose of simplicity I will often be referring to feeds as RSS. RSS and Atom feeds are the structures that organize content which is being updated on a regular basis in order for others to retrieve it. This content could be articles, blog posts, photos, PDF documents, PowerPoint Presentations, audio files, video files, or other applications. If the content is the flesh of an orange then a feed would be its skin. The skin keeps the flesh in place so that it is easier to transport. In 2003, RSS was more commonly associated with weblogs, known as blogs. Blogs and RSS feeds almost seemed to be an isolated cause and effect. Where there was a blog, you would find an RSS feed. As this visualization shows, RSS feeds can more recently be seen being used for many different purposes. Bloggers created a different type of media, by adding audio and video files as the primary content
