Setting Options, and customizing the Drawing toolbar.
Under Tools, Options (Alt-t o), set the following:
“View” tab: Print and Web Layout Options—check Drawings and Object Anchors
“General” tab: If you are using Office XP, UNcheck “Automatically create Drawing Canvas when inserting AutoShapes”
(The Drawing Canvas is a new feature in Word 2002, designed to make it easy to create a complex shape. I have yet to discover any value to it, and find it to be simply a nuisance.)
“Edit” tab: Check “Enable click and type”. This may be useful when you are working with a drawing, since it allows you to position text in relation to the drawing without hitting the Enter key repeatedly.
If you are using Word 2002, I recommend unchecking “Show Paste Option Buttons”. These buttons get in the way, and even sneak there way into my web documents!

Formerly a College of Engineering system only, Eos was made available to other NCSU colleges in 1996 in a project called Unity. Today, all NCSU students, faculty, and staff receive accounts on a fully merged campus-wide system, or realm, often referred to as Eos/Unity.

Protecting Microsoft Exchange

Though the technological reasons to protect Exchange systems may be self evident, there are quantifiable fiscal reasons to protect these messaging systems as well. The dollar value of any given data-set may be difficult to calculate, but the cost-savings of avoiding even a single Exchange outage can easily be determined. In most organizations, there are at the very least one or two subsets of end-users who cannot continue to work without these systems functioning. Even if these groups might not regularly produce revenue in the form of direct sales or billable engagements, salaries, benefits and fixed costs still accrue during an outage.

The Forest Service has the capability to access data residing in Oracle and other databases with Office 2000. Microsoft Access is part of the Office 2000 suite and has a strong ability to “link” to tables in other databases including Oracle. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to configure a PC for the linkage and illustrate how to make the connection. The primary benefit of using Access to manipulate data is its rich interface to quickly design queries, reports, and forms for data entry.

You may already know that along with Office 2007, Microsoft introduced a new file format that is not compatible with older versions of Office. If you haven’t upgraded to Office 2007 or are using Mac OSX then you won’t be able to automatically open Word documents that carry the .docx extension or PowerPoint Presentations (.pptx). If you are using an older version of Office in Windows and attempt to open a .docx or .pptx file, you may be prompted with a message to install the Microsoft Compatibly Pack (which you should do) or you could get an error message. On a Mac, a .docx file will show up as a .zip file that you won’t be able to open in Word. This means that an instructor using Office 2003 could have trouble opening a Word 2007 document that a student submits in Blackboard.

Tucked in with the many security updates (and the restoration of one’s ability to paste text from a web page into a Word document!), a very interesting modification to the Office 2003 software waits quietly for installation with Service Pack 3. Unbeknownst to the user installing this “Pack 3”, their Office software is about to be imbued with a runaway power: the cutoff of access to your old documents.
