How to Do Everything with Web 2.0 Mashups Chapter 1This chapter presents a few of the thousands of mashups you can find today on the Web. No one knows how many other mashups live behind corporate firewalls, but, chances are, the number is large. The mashups in this chapter were chosen to show the variety of the world of mashups. Some of them are proofs-of-concept, others are works-in-progress, and others are experiments. Others are actual, live products or marketing tools. Mashups often provide visualization of information, and, frequently, that visualization is in the form of interactive maps. The release of the Google maps API was a major factor in the interest in mashups, in large part because so much information lends itself to mapping. As you will see in later chapters of this book, new technologies grouped together as Web 2.0 and AJAX are the building blocks of mashups. In conjunction with APIs such as Google mapping, eBay, Yahoo!, Flickr, and others, you will soon be able to build your own mashups like the ones shown in this chapter.

AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a term first used by Jesse James Garrett in 2005. AJAX is generally considered to include JavaScript, XML, XHTML, DOM, and XMLHttpRequest, all of which are technologies developed in the 1990s, some of them in conjunction with Microsoft’s Remote Scripting project. Despite this plethora of technologies, the principle is quite simple: a Web page can retrieve and display data without having to refresh or reload the entire page. Data does not have to start at Cell A1. Data can be placed wherever you like as long as your data is in a solid block of adjacent cells. When you print, you can select a specific set of cells so that empty cells are not printed.
Data Types
There are several different types of data that can be entered into a cell. Some common Data Types are:
- Text
- Numbers
- Dates
- Currency
Each of these can be formatted to suit the requirements of your data. For instance, you can alter the number of decimal places for a Number, or the way a date is written out or abbreviated with a Date. Most Data is entered by typing Data into a cell or group of cells, then defining a Data Type and Format for the cells. If you have a large block of cells with the same Data Type and Format, you can select them all at once and set the Data Type and Format for all of them.

You must either have the Reseller DBManager, which is specifically for Server 2 accounts and above so that you can resell this offering to your customers, or the End User DBManager, which is specifically for Server 1 accounts. This feature can not be resold, since Server 1’s do not have virtual hosts.
Accessing DBManager
First, access your DBManager in the following manner: http://domain.com/dbmanager/
Of course, you would replace the domain.com with your virtual server domain name, and your username and password would be the same as your control panel. For resellers who provision the DBManager for virtual hosts, we will cover how to access and password protect it later in this tutorial. Once you are inside of your DBManager, you should see a screen such as this one:

The SRP uses a client-server model where multiple client processes request services from a server using request messages. These requests are answered using reply messages. The SRP includes only one mandatory request message (called REQ) and one mandatory reply message (REP). REQ is sent by a client to the server to indicate a specific application-defined service (e.g. reservation, confirmation, information request). The server responds with a REP message, the contents of which is specific to each type of request. The server should check the validity of each request and should not fail if an invalid request is received.
The client follows these three steps to make a request:
1. Establishes a TCP connection with the server,
2. Sends the request to the server, and
3. Closes the connection.
If the request is valid, the server
1. Opens a TCP connection to the client,
2. Sends the reply, and
3. Closes the connection.
Note that the REQ and REP messages are sent in two separate TCP sessions. The client will close the existing REQ TCP session and wait for the server to open a new TCP session for the REP.
