  • Peer-to-Peer Programming with Wireless Devices
  • Peer-to-Peer programming (P2P) has in recent years become a widely explored research area. With the evolution of wireless technology such as mobile phones, the idea to bring these two technologies together gives a new dimension to P2P communication, collaboration and resource sharing. This master thesis explores the domain of Mobile Peer-to-Peer networking and proposes a Peer-to-Peer System with Wireless Devices. The system is based on an open, protocol-based P2P platform called JXTA. It allows any connected device on the network ranging from sensors and cell phones to personal computers and servers to communicate and collaborate in a Peer-to-Peer manner. It is platform and network independent and designed to be implemented on any networking device. JXTA for J2ME (JXME) is a lightweight version of JXTA that gives P2P functionality to constrained wireless devices. The technology, which is open source, is under development by the JXTA community, and this thesis focuses on the development of JXME for the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC). The system proposed uses the JXME API, but suggests a more specific approach to implement different Peer operations such as Peer discovery, resource advertising and file transfer. Because of the limitations of wireless devices, one or more powerful Peers need to participate in the network as Proxy Services. This gives both the advantages of a fixed P2P network and the mobility of a wireless device. The prototype developed demonstrates the P2P system with simple collaboration and file sharing. The application has been successfully tested on phone emulators, and network tests show that the

  • Numeric and Spatial Data Mashups
  • Data visualisation has been defined as: The set of techniques used to turn a set of data into visual insight. It aims to give the data a meaningful representation by exploiting the powerful discerning capabilities of the human eye. Part 1 of this briefing paper will highlight some examples of new collaborative web services using Web 2.0 technologies which venture into the numeric data visualisation arena. These mashups allow researchers to upload and analyse their own data in ‘open’ and dynamic environments. Broadly speaking the numeric data being referred to could be micro-data (data about the individual), macro-data or country-level data, derived or summary data. Part 2 will investigate and showcase examples of spatial (or geographic) data mashups using Web 2.0 technologies and how they can be utilised in a research environment. This paper does not intend to conduct an investigation into the definitive merits of each utility but rather compare the functionality, ‘openness’ and usability of such utilities from the perspective of a researcher willing to share or analyse their data. A word of warning - researchers will have to account for the inconstant nature of the web - resources such as those described above may not be around in two, five or ten years. Not only will there be further advances in web technologies but services merge, are bought out or indeed cease to exist. Services that start off open or free may become ‘closed’. Resources may start up with a particular rationale but may evolve into a completely different
  • Microsoft Word Printing Issues
  • There have been several reports of “printing problems” in MS Word reported over the last couple of months. After much research and testing, I believe that I have been able to determine the probable cause of these problems and a potential fix. Microsoft Word is highly customizable program. The problem arises when changes are made to the default printer settings without the user knowing this has happened. This could be interpreted as a “corruption”, but if used as designed, it really is a feature. To better understand how to avoid this problem, users need to better understand one of the basic processes of the MS Word program. Word maintains a file called normal.dot. This is a template file – the basic pattern that Word uses every time that it starts a new blank document. This file can be customized if, for example, users always print to non-standard size paper or wanted specific margins or tabs. The “problem” appears to be caused by changes being made to this normal.dot template. My guess is that there are one or more documents “floating around” where the template has been changed and the current user inadvertently updates their own normal.dot to match. • Notes on Application Development Tools for Microsoft .NET Micro Framework and Windows SideShow
  • .NET Micro Framework (.NET MF) is a new technology that can be applied to a variety of small devices. For a relatively new technology, there are already several different development tools and a platform standard already available. Some of the development tools are still in beta, and as you can guess new ideas are already in the works. This application note is a guide to what tools are available for application development. This application note will be updated as new tools become available. As of this writing there are a couple of .NET MF platform types available for application development: generic .NET MF boards for embedded systems and Windows® SideShow- compatible devices. SideShow is an application that runs on .NET MF, but it is also a specific standard. The .NET MF device must adhere to the SideShow standard. At a minimum to run SideShow, a device must have an LCD, communications port, and a set of buttons for navigation (up, down, right, and left), selection, menu, and back. The device is simple enough that many .NET MF platforms could run SideShow. OEMs use the .NET Micro Framework porting kit to port .NET MF to a specific device. Porting is a separate development process that we will not cover here. Once the port is complete, application development takes place in Visual Studio. At a minimum, .NET MF application development requires Visual Studio 2005 or higher and the .NET Micro Framework SDK. SideShow requires some addition tools. There are two types of applications that

  • 1. What is the Patch Tool 1.) The Patch tool lets you repair a selected area with pixels from another area or a pattern. 2.) Like the Healing Brush tool, the Patch tool matches the texture, luminosity, and color of the sampled pixels to the source pixels. 3.) When repairing with pixels from the image, select a small area to produce the best result. 2. How to Use the Patch Tool … the Cliff Notes version … followed by step-by-step tutorials. 1.) In a nutshell – you make a selection with the Patch tool or any selection tool, drag the selected area with the Patch tool, and upon releasing the mouse the healing technology will make the repair. 2.) The most important decision to make before using the Patch tool is whether to patch from source, from destination or from pattern. Before using the Patch tool take a moment to evaluate the image and image damage to decide which of the three options to use. • Patching from Source = circle the damaged area and move the selection to good image information. Use this choice when the damaged area is uneven, ragged, and/or within similarly toned areas. • Patching from Destination = circle good image information and move the selection over the damaged image area. Use this choice when you need to match a pattern or lines in the image. • Patching from Pattern = the least used option – yet very useful method to quickly repair damage that is spread throughout the image. To use this method you
