Crystal Reports has enjoyed a long association with Microsoft and has shipped with Visual Basic (and subsequently Visual Studio) as the default report writer since 1993. Developers have traditionally had a love-hate relationship with Crystal Reports; they loved the functionality it provided and the free run-time license, but they hated having to upgrade to the latest version to get the features they required. Another complaint was that reports could not be created or modified programmatically; they could be created only through the user interface (UI) with either the developer UI with Visual Studio or the consumer UI with the Crystal Reports retail package.

Beginning with version 2.5 (currently in Preview Edition) building Silverlight 2 applications, and especially assembling the User Interface components such as items from the toolbox, and layout controls, is easier than ever. A Note on This Tutorial. The history of the material for this tutorial is that Scott Guthrie wrote a terrific introduction to this material at the end of February, which he gave me permission to turn into a series of videos, currently (or soon to be) available on Silverlight.NET. This tutorial completes the circle by building on the videos and integrating the material into the Silverlight Tutorial series. The project we’re setting out to build is very similar to the Silverlight chat service built by ScottGu, and is shown in Figure 5-1

With each new major release of Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft changes the languages and methodologies for building executables from the source created within an application. Without the assistance of simplification tools, then, development teams integrating Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 must re-write and redesign significant amounts of their application build processes. But, such an endeavor proves so costly and time-consuming that many enterprises choose to delay or omit upgrades to their development environments. Unfortunately, avoidance will quickly create a situation where new applications are written in the new Visual Studio but without compatibility to the vast amount of programs and systems that were developed in older versions.
