In the late 1990’s many ERP companies caught the web browser wave, undertaking projects to leverage the Internet and browser technology and even to convert their software to “lite-client” or web “portal” architectures. Unfortunately for some, .NET came on the scene too soon after this major overhaul. When .NET appeared, some were too technically exhausted, or inflexible, or still basking in the glow of their new “Internet-based architectures” to recognize and embrace .NET. Other ERP software companies were and continue to be simply too busy struggling to stay solvent during the devastating one-two-three punch of Y2K, the recession of 2000, and 9/11. They lack the resources to consider the complete restructuring of their products that .NET warrants.

Over the last 12 years, Microsoft Corporation has developed a successful operating system for mobile devices based on Windows CE, currently known as Windows Mobile. The Windows Mobile deliverable consists of (1) a particular set of Windows CE components, (2) a logo test kit requirements document, (3) a set of light weight middleware applications, and (4) commercialization components, such as drivers and value-added services provided by OEMs and Mobile Operators. Microsoft licenses the Windows Mobile OS to third parties, (generally OEMs and MOs), who commercialize and sell the operating system as part of a device and service offering.

The most significant differences between Microsoft’s Network Access Protection architecture and other NAC architectures you see in the iLabs come because Microsoft does not make switches or routers. Therefore, the path for handling enforcement is different, focusing on server enforcement and standards-based switch enforcement. The original intent of MS-NAP was not security, but to find and quarantine non-compliant clients in the enterprise LAN. As the interest in NAC has increased, Microsoft has adjusted their architecture to include more enforcement mechanisms. In early 2007, the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) and Microsoft announced interoperability between TNC and NAP thus opening the door for a single unified Network Access Control client
