Approved beta users get access to OpenSolaris™ operating system (OS) at http://www.opensolaris.org/ on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). OpenSolaris on Amazon EC2 is an Amazon Web service that incorporates hardware virtualization technologies based on the Sun™ xVM software and the Xen open source community work. Information about Amazon EC2 is located at: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2
The Amazon EC2 AMI tools are command-line utilities to help bundle an Amazon Machine Image (AMI), create an AMI from an existing machine or installed volume, and upload a bundled AMI to Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service).
AMI Tools can be downloaded from: http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/ connect/entry.jspa?externalID=368&categoryID=88.
The Amazon EC2 API command line tools serve as the client interface to the Amazon EC2 Web service. These tools are employed to register and launch instances, manipulate security groups, and more. The tools are the primary interface to Amazon EC2 services.
This section describes how to setup the necessary tools/utility with the appropriate version, including environment variables that are needed for establishing a connection to Amazon EC2 services.
In order to access the Amazon EC2 environment, it is required to have an SSH client and appropriate Java™ Runtime Environment (JRE) software. This guide was developed using Solaris clients - for other clients (for example, Windows or Linux), refer to the Amazon EC2 Web site. If using a Solaris client to access the Amazon EC2 Web Service, an SSH client is already installed. If using a Solaris 10 system as client, theEventBased Programming TutorialThis tutorial will introduce you to event?based programming (EBP) using a Windows desktop application written in C#. The application, called SystemBrowser, works a little like Windows Explorer: it displays folders and files, as shown in the next figure.
What is EventBased Programming?
Before diving into the design and implementation of SystemBrowser, let’s back up for a second to discuss what EBP is, why it is appealing and how it allows us to control coupling. In a nutshell, EBP is a way to design a software system using events and event notifications to connect the major parts together. The advantage of this approach, over traditional call?any?object?you?need designs, is lower coupling. In many cases you eliminate static coupling between parts, making it possible to test those parts in isolation, using a test fixture.
I’ve barely begun and I’ve already introduced a couple of expressions that deserve explaining. What does parts mean in the previous sentence? I use this word to refer generically to classes, objects and assemblies. And what is static coupling. Unless you’re read other material of mine discussing coupling, you’re probably unfamiliar with the expression. Also, if there is something called static coupling, you might guess that there is something called dynamic coupling. You’d be right.

New e-mail service at NUI, Galway
A new e-mail service for staff, based on the industry-leading Exchange platform from Microsoft, is currently at pilot stage. This service will be made available to all staff and research post-graduates from early in 2006, and in addition to providing staff with a reliable and secure e-mail service, it will offer a number of value-added features including calendar-sharing, nominated delegate access to email and calendars, meeting notices, a Global Address Book containing contact details for University staff, and access from certain mobile devices including BlackBerrys.
In conjunction with the core Exchange based service on campus, a web-based version of MS Outlook, Outlook Web Access (OWA), will allow staff to check and read their e-mail and calendar from any computer with internet access. From January 1 st 2006 all new staff joining the University will be provided with Exchange based e-mail. Subsequently, all current staff will be migrated onto the new service on a phased basis. As part of the migration service, we will facilitate the migration of your existing mail on Bodkin onto the new Exchange server. More details of the migration schedule for existing staff will be published on ourInstallation Procedure Of BOSS LiveCD On HdBoot with BOSS LiveCD, Create two seperate partitions on your harddisk let us call as sda1 and sda2 .Then sda1 will be of 5GB(min 2GB) and sda2 for swap (double the RAM). *Format sda1 using ext3 filesystem and sda2 with swap. # mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1 # mkswap /dev/sda2 *mount sda1 in /mnt/sda1 #mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 *copy /BOSS/* to /mnt/sda1 => #cp Rpdv /BOSS/* /mnt/sda1 *Edit the /etc/fstab #vi /mnt/sda2/etc/fstab ADD:: /dev/sda2 / /dev/sda3 swap

While we have concentrated on Windows aspects, the equivalent systems should work without any difficulty on Linux. We will eventually test the generation of native Linux executables.
The advantage of compiled Eclipse application executables is that they do not require the JRE, they are self-contained except for the one swt dll. The applications can be distributed in zip format and can be moved around on a machine without requiring changes to the registry (there is no information saved in the Windows registry).
GCC and MinGW:
To compile Java applications to run on Windows, download the MinGW build of GCC/GCJ 3.3 for win32 from http://www.thisiscool.com/gcc_mingw.htm. This build uses a slightly older version of Eclipse (Eclipse 2.0.2) but it worked without any problems on the applications that we tested. This build includes a build of the SWT libraries so that the entire Eclipse application can be compiled. (The Swing libraries have not yet been ported to GCC/GCJ.) Special thanks are due to Mohan Embar and Ranjit Mathew for their work in building this win32 version.

SSH encrypts traffic in both directions, preventing traffic sniffing and password theft. SSH also offers several additional useful features:
• Compression: traffic may be optionally compressed at the stream level.
• Public key authentication: optionally replacing password authentication.
• Authentication of the server: making ”man-in-the-middle” attack more difficult
• Port forwarding: arbitrary TCP sessions can be forwarded over an SSH connection.
• X11 forwarding: SSH can forward your X11 sessions too.
• File transfer: the SSH protocol family includes two file transfer protocols.
SSH was created by Tatu Ylonen in 1995 and was at first released under an open-source license. Later versions were to bear increasing restrictive licenses, though they generally remained free for non-commercial use. He went on to form SSH Communications security which sells commercial SSH implementations to this day. The earlier versions of his code implement what is now referred to as SSH protocol v.1.
In 1997 a process began to make the SSH protocols Internet standards under the auspices of the IETF. This lead to the development of version 2 of the SSH protocol. In the rewrite, the protocol was split into a transport layer, and connection and authentication protocols. Several security issues were also addressed as part of this process.
