  • Binding xamDataGrid in Expression Blend and Visual Studio
  • Microsoft Expression Blend is an application that generates XAML (Extensible Application Markup Language) via a user interface. Blend is designed to create all of the WPF UI (User Interface) elements such as windows, buttons, grid, and brushes on a designer surface. Blend will then emit all the necessary XAML code. Blend is a designer tool, so you still use Visual Studio 2005 to write the application code. (Note: If you have the next version of Visual Studio, codenamed “Orcas,” installed, you don’t need to install the Visual Studio Extensions for WPF or the .NET Framework 3.) Using the xamDataGrid in Blend 1. Launch Visual Studio 2005. 2. Start a New Project. 3. Select NET Framework 3.0 Windows Application (WPF) (VB or C#) as in Figure 1. 4. Add a reference to Infragistics WPF controls and supporting API as in Figure 2. 5. Build the Solution and Save all. As yet the Infragistics controls are not available in the toolbox to drag onto the design surface. We will achieve this by using Microsoft’s Expression Blend. 6. Start Blend and open the project just created. Note that Blend can read Visual Studio Solution files. Browse to where you saved the solution file and open it. You should see your solution displayed similar to Figure 3 in Blend. To access the Infragistics controls click on the button marked in red, the controls are in the Asset Library. • Intel Architecture Optimization Manual
  • In general, developing fast applications for Intel Architecture (IA) processors is not difficult. An understanding of the architecture and good development practices make the difference between a fast application and one that runs significantly slower than its full potential. Of course, applications developed for the 8086/8088, 80286, Intel386™ (DX or SX), and Intel486™ processors will execute on the Pentium ®, Pentium Pro and Pentium II processors without any modification or recompilation. However, the following code optimization techniques and architectural information will help you tune your application to its greatest potential. Tuning an application to execute fast across the Intel Architecture (IA) is relatively simple when the programmer has the appropriate tools. To begin the tuning process, you need the following: • Knowledge of the Intel Architecture. See Chapter 2. • Knowledge of critical stall situations that may impact the performance of your application. See Chapters 3, 4 and 5. • Knowledge of how good your compiler is at optimization and an understanding of how to help the compiler produce good code. • Knowledge of the performance bottlenecks within your application. Use the VTune performance monitoring tool described in this document. • Ability to monitor the performance of the application. Use VTune. VTune, Intel’s Visual Tuning Environment Release 2.0 is a useful tool to help you understand your application and where to begin tuning. The Pentium and Pentium Pro processors provide the ability to monitor your code with performance event counters. These performance event counters can be accessed using VTune. Within each section of this document the appropriate
  • What Is Web 2.0 Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software
  • The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web. Many people concluded that the web was overhyped, when in fact bubbles and consequent shakeouts appear to be a common feature of all technological revolutions. Shakeouts typically mark the point at which an ascendant technology is ready to take its place at center stage. The pretenders are given the bum's rush, the real success stories show their strength, and there begins to be an understanding of what separates one from the other. The concept of "Web 2.0" began with a conference brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O'Reilly VP, noted that far from having "crashed", the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What's more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as "Web 2.0" might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born. The list went on and on. But what was it that made us identify one application or approach as "Web 1.0" and another as "Web 2.0"? (The question is particularly urgent because the Web 2.0 meme has become so widespread that companies are now pasting it on as a marketing buzzword, with no real understanding of just
  • Writing CGI scripts in Tcl
  • CGI scripts enable dynamic generation of HTML pages. This paper describes how to write CGI scripts using Tcl. Many people use Tcl for this purpose already but in an ad hoc way and without realizing many of the more non-obvious benefits. This paper reviews these benefits and provides a framework and examples. Canonical solutions to HTML quoting problems are presented. This paper also discusses using Tcl for the generation of different formats from the same document. As an example, FAQ generation in both text and HTML are described. CGI scripts have many advantages over statically written HTML. For example, CGI scripts can automatically adapt to changes in the environment, such as the date in the previous example. CGI scripts can run programs, include and process data, and just about anything that can be done in traditional programs. CGI scripts are particularly worthwhile in handling Web forms. Web forms allow users to enter data into a page and then send the results to a Web server for processing. The Web form itself does not have to be generated by a CGI script. However, data entered by a user may require a customized response. Therefore, a dynamically generated response via a CGI script is appropriate. Since the response may produce another form, it is common to generate forms dynamically as well as their responses. Download pdf Writing CGI scripts in Tcl
  • eXtc Web Developer Overview
  • eXtc Web Developer (EWD) is a very high productivity, enterprise-grade platform for developing web applications. It includes an advanced but extremely easy to use Ajax Framework, allowing sophisticated, modern web applications to be built almost as quickly and simply as static web pages. EWD has been designed to be technology-independent, and is potentially capable of working with any web application front-end environment (eg PHP, Java Server Pages, ASP.Net), any scripting language and any database. Background There are numerous technologies for developing web applications, all of which have their pros and cons, and each with their own supporters and detractors. There are mainstream, non-proprietary and/or Open Source technologies such as PHP and Java Server Pages (JSP), and there are proprietary technologies such as .Net. The choice of technology will usually be a result of issues such as performance, cost, available skills, corporate strategy or independent technical advice. Although the end product of these technologies is HTML and JavaScript, the mechanics and methodology needed to program and use these technologies are very different. It is very difficult to change your mind and change technologies once you have committed to one approach. Programming staff will tend to be skilled in the technology you’ve chosen, and changing technologies involves significant retraining and/or re-recruitment of staff. eXtc Web Developer (EWD) completely changes this situation and allows you to develop your web applications in a way that is independent of your web application run-time technology, and allows you to focus on what you are trying to do, rather than

  • Microsoft Vista/Office 2007/Office 2008 Implementation Planning Overview
  • The ITS desktop support teams (Blue/Green) and other ITS staff members have started preparations for the introduction of Microsoft Vista and Office 2007/2008 to campus. This document summarizes the implementation plan. This plan description will be revised as needed. Campus Move to Microsoft Vista OS The Blue and Green Desktop Support Teams have been testing the Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise Edition OS for several months. The present plan is to begin to introduce the OS on new college-purchased PCs beginning late in the second quarter of 2008, probably with new system replacements starting in May or June. There is no plan to have a “forklift” introduction. Instead, the OS will be introduced as systems are replaced on their normal cycle. ITS has been purchasing “Vista compatible” systems for several months in anticipation of the upgrade, but has been installing Windows XP Professional Edition on those computers. These computers are ones that have adequate memory, disk space, and performance to support an upgrade to the Vista OS. It is possible that these Vista compatible computers will be upgraded from Windows XP to Vista, largely upon request and depending upon compatibility issues that could be uncovered. Current systems that are not presently equipped for Vista but that could be upgraded to a Vista compatible level will be considered for upgrade if the cost of doing so reasonably improves the utility of the system over its remaining life cycle. Older systems that are not presently equipped to support Vista and cannot be upgraded to a Vista-compatible
  • XOSD Guide and Reference Manual
  • XOSD is a system that displays text on top of the other windows, much like the on-screen display (OSD) used by most modern televisions and video-players. In typical open-source style, it was written to scratch an itch. André Renaud had just installed an infa-red sensor in his computer and was using a stereo remote-control to change what track XMMS was playing, but he could not see the track title from across the room. So André sat down and wrote XOSD to display track-names in XMMS. Over time features were added and XOSD became a stand-alone library, rather than just a plug-in for XMMS; eventually, XOSD 1.0 was released. Download XOSD Guide and Reference Manual
