  • Web 2.0 Testing
  • Websites have changed significantly in the Web 2.0 world. The youtube generation has quite different expectations about websites in general. For starters, websites with plain HTML forms and smartly laid text are passé, and are being replaced by websites full of dynamic content: Google Maps, Gap’s highly interactive website and Nike’s all new Flash website are all examples of the new generation of websites. Not only are the sites getting richer – more rich media, video etc. – they enable users to do a lot more. Companies like Timberland, Ikea, Home Depot, Sherwin Williams, have created websites that offer sophisticated applications that allow users to create-a-custom-product or try-before-you-buy. A Web 2.0 website may feature any or all of a number of the following techniques: Rich Internet application techniques, optionally Ajax and Flash based Syndication and aggregation of data in RSS/Atom Extensive use of folksonomies (as tags or tag clouds) REST or XML Web service APIs Semantically valid XHTML markup and/or the use of Micro formats Clean and meaningful URLs Use of wikis Web log publishing Mashups Add these new technologies to the fact that the web browser market is no longer dominated by Microsoft Internet Explorer. Browsers like Firefox, Opera, Netscape and AOL are increasingly emerging as significant competitors. Download pdf Web 2.0 Testing

  • An Introduction to the Java Programming Language
  • In 1991, a group of Sun Microsystems engineers led by James Gosling decided to develop a language for consumer devices (cable boxes, etc.). They wanted the language to be small and use efficient code since these devices do not have powerful CPUs. They also wanted the language to be hardware independent since different manufacturers would use different CPUs. The project was code-named Green. These conditions led them to decide to compile the code to an intermediate machine-like code for an imaginary CPU called a virtual machine. (Actually, there is a real CPU that implements this virtual CPU now.) This intermediate code (called bytecode) is completely hardware independent. Programs are run by an interpreter that converts the bytecode to the appropriate native machine code. Thus, once the interpreter has been ported to a computer, it can run any bytecoded program. Sun uses UNIX for their computers, so the developers based their new language on C++. They picked C++ and not C because they wanted the language to be object-oriented. The original name of the language was Oak. However, they soon discovered that there was already a programming language called Oak, so they changed the name to Java. The Green project had a lot of trouble getting others interested in Java for smart devices. It was not until they decided to shift gears and market Java as a language for web applications that interest in Java took off. Many of the advantages that Java has for smart devices are even bigger advantages on the web. Currently,

  • Short History of Software Methods
  • This short history identifies 32 major classes of software methods that have emerged over the last 50 years. There are many variations of each major class of software method, which renders the number of software methods in the hundreds. This short history contains a brief synopsis of each of the 32 major classes of software methods, identifying the decade and year they appeared, their purpose, their major tenets, their strengths, and their weaknesses. The year each software method appeared corresponds to the seminal work that introduced the method based on extensive bibliographic research and the strengths and weaknesses were based on scholarly and empirical works to provide an objective capstone for each method. The 1960s were a defining period for the world of computers giving rise to what we now know as mainframe computers (Solomon, 1966). Think of mainframe computers as building-sized calculators, most of which can now fit in your shirt pocket and are versatile enough to run on sunlight. Of course, these mainframe computers gave rise to large scale operating systems requiring hundreds of expert programmers to produce over many years (Needham and Hartley, 1969). More importantly, high-level computer programming languages such as the Common Business Oriented Language or COBOL were created to help humans communicate with these building-sized calculators and instruct them to perform useful functions more easily (Sammet, 1962). The creation of these mainframes, their operating systems, and their high-level COBOL computer programming languages caused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO to form a new technical
  • Enabling an Accessible Web 2.0
  • The Web is constantly evolving and changing. In the beginning the Web was a click, wait, replace model. A user would type a Web address, and a page was loaded. To interact or get more details about the current topic the user would provide information via a form, click submit and wait for a new page to be downloaded. The foundation of the Web was to be able to share information. Until competent search engines were developed, the user would click on provided links to traverse the myriad of data. The Web opened up a vast world of knowledge to people. Except it was, and still is, very visually oriented and relies on the mouse interface to navigate. Eventually the Web became more accessible. Mechanisms are available and supported in Web browsers to provide keyboard navigation and to enable assistive technologies to allow persons with disabilities to use the Web. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 were developed in the W3C to provide guidance and techniques to make the Web Accessible [1]. The original Web was not perfect but with some work by Web developers it could be used by all. Now we are entering the next generation of the Web – Web 2.0. It is all about interaction, collaboration, and social networking. It is more dynamic and fluid and no longer just static pages of information. This presents yet another challenge for people with disabilities. These new interaction models are pushing the limits of the technologies of the Web and the
