The SketchUp OBJ exporter extends the export capability of SketchUp by providing an additional export type in the File > Export > 3d Model dialog. OBJ is a legacy ASCII format developed by Wavefront/Alias Software.

• Support for positioned textures. The positioning of textures is now preserved upon export.
• Support for transparent materials. The transparency of materials is now exported to the OBJ file.

This tutorial shows how to create behaviors for interactive textures: scrolling, blending textures on the faces of a cube. We will work on one face of the cube with its specific material-shader and one texture “mountain.jpg”. Part 4 of this tutorial covers setting up an orbital camera.

A BrickMap is a good way to speed up your render times if you have a complicated environment that also has a moving camera shot. By creating a BrickMap you no longer have to calculate the occlusion on each frame;it simply references the BrickMap file. You will want to wait to create a BrickMap pass until you have finished modeling your set,as you can’t make any adjustments or changes to your set once you create the BrickMap,or else you will have to re-create it.

1. Create a ‘Helix’ spline object from the create panel. Make sure there are plenty of turns in it and that both radii are the same.
2. Add an extrude modifier and adjust the amount so it just about reaches the next coil, get it as close as possible but don’t spend ages doing it as step 4 will sort it out.
3. As you will notice the tube is inside out so add a ‘Normals’ modifier to flip them and turn it the right way.
4. Now as there is still a gap in-between the coils add a ‘Vertex Weld’ modifier and increase the value just enough to weld the gap together.

Part 1- In Maya, exporting a cube with textures Before exporting to Virtools, make sure that all faces inside the cube have their normals facing towards the inside of the cube. Go to Modeling, Display > Polygon Components > Normals Normals are represented with colored lines sticking out of the faces of the cube. The red arrow shows the way one normal should look like.

We are going to create a table lamp with lines and lathe in 3ds max. Go to Create>Shapes>Line. 1 In the Splines rollout set Initial Type to smooth and Drag type to bezier. In the left viewport draw a line similar to below. Go to Modifiers>Patch/Spline Modeling>Lathe. Don’t worry if you’re lamp base looks similar to below. In the Modifiers rollout click the plus sign next to Lathe and then click on Axis. Move the axis until you get a nice shape. You may have to turn on Flip Normals.
