Building a Better Style GuideWhy are style guides so frequently created, but so rarely successful? All too many projects to improve the usability of a user interface start with a request to create a style guide. To many user-centered designers, a style guide is the documentation of a design – the end of a design process – not a starting point for usability. And yet, we continue to create them, despite that fact that they may do little to address real usability problems or create a common approach to interaction. This paper describes some tactics and techniques for creating style guides that present and organize the appropriate information in a usable structure.
WHAT’S IN A STYLE GUIDE?
Style guides can be classified as platform (or language) guide, general design guides, or corporate style guides for a specific application. 2 File Organization
2.1 C# Sourcefiles
Keep your classes/files short, don't exceed 2000 LOC, divide your code up, make structures clearer. Put every class in a separate file and name the file like the class name (with .cs as extension of course). This convention makes things much easier.
2.2 Directory Layout
Create a directory for every namespace. (For MyProject.TestSuite.TestTier use MyProject/ TestSuite/TestTier as the path, do not use the namespace name with dots.) This makes it easier to map namespaces to the directory layout.
3 Indentation
3.1 Wrapping Lines
When an expression will not fit on a single line, break it up according to these general principles:
- Break after a comma.
- Break after an operator.
- Prefer higher-level breaks to lower-level breaks.
- Align the new line with the beginning of the expression at the same level on the previous line

Whilst writing the EJB modules for our JGenerator product, we started punting an email back and forth containing all the issues we had with EJB. And there were many. Before we knew it we ended up with 101 howlers. In this article we present an edited version of the email. It isn't a complete list and there may be some overlapping issues. If there is enough interest we will turn it into a more formal analysis.
Before you flame us for chasing after your sacred cow with a big stick, all three of us have belonged to the "pro-Java" lobby since Java was in its first beta, and we still do. We have evangelised Java at every company we have worked at. However, EJB just presents so much that is wrong and messed up that we felt we had to speak out.
The 101 issues are divided into the following categories:
