  • With Active Directory, Microsoft has provided administrators with a powerful directory service to organize network data and to control access to network resources from a central point. However, "powerful" by necessity also means complex, and the complexity of Active Directory has probably contributed to slowing down the rollout of Windows 2000 and 2003 servers. Initially, many organizations found simply migrating their flat NT4 domain structures into a more sophisticated Active Directory wrapping to be a significant challenge. By now, many have defined their Active Directory Forests, survived an often cumbersome deployment process, and seen their directories mature into efficient tools for centralized administration. Policies have become the levers of network management, and, as a result, Active Directory has become a repository holding extremely sensitive data. Passwords Remain the Weakest Link in the Security Chain Surprisingly, in most organizations, authentication is still based on passwords only, regardless of how sophisticated their use of Active Directory otherwise may be. Ideally, in a pure Windows 2000 / XP environment, Windows clients use NTLM 2 or Kerberos to protect authentication requests, which is certainly a great improvement compared to the old LM or NTLM 1 protocols. Yet, by default and for backwards compatibility, Windows clients will revert to the old, weaker protocols if required to do so by one of the nodes involved.   • The purpose of this white paper is to demonstrate how to use the ODBC driver plugin with Microsoft® Access® database files. This allows LISTSERV® Maestro to use Access databases as a data source, making it possible to have LISTSERV Maestro extract data directly from an Access database [3]. The ODBC driver plugin is a special database plugin that allows recipient information or drop-in content to be pulled from any ODBC data source. The ODBC driver plugin can be used in the recipient wizard with the “Select Recipients From a Database” recipient type [1]. It can also be used in the target group wizard with the “LISTSERV Maestro Retrieves Recipients from Database” target group type [3] to retrieve recipient information from an ODBC data source. Additionally, it can be used to create drop-in content elements by retrieving content information from a database [1]. ODBC drivers exist for many applications [5], making a wide range of data available to LISTSERV Maestro for recipient retrieval or drop-in content definition. By connecting directly to an Access database, you can use any standard SQL statement to extract data. You can even use the Access tools and wizards for constructing your query and testing it within Access. Then, by switching from Design View to SQL View, you can copy the SQL statement from Access and paste it in to LISTSERV Maestro.   • Welcome to the third and final lesson for this tutorial. If you've gone through Lesson 1 and Lesson 2, you already know the essentials for installing and writing useful scripts with MySQL and PHP. We're going to look at some useful PHP functions that should make your life a lot easier. First, let's look at include files. We all know the basics of includes, right? Contents of an external file are referenced and imported into the main file. It's pretty easy: You call a file and it's included. When we do this in PHP there are two functions we need to talk about: include() and require(). The difference between these two functions is subtle but important, so let's take a closer look. The require() function works in a XSSI-like way; files are included as part of the original document as soon as that file is parsed, regardless of its location in the script. So if you decide to place a require() function inside a conditional loop, the external file will be included even if that part of the conditional loop is false. The include() function imports the referenced file each time it is encountered. If it's not encountered, PHP won't bother with it. This means that you can use include in loops and conditional statements, and they'll work exactly as planned. Finally, if you use require() and the file you're including does not exist, your script will halt and produce an error. If you use include() , your script will generate a warning, but

  • Building a Mini-Sumo Robot
  • Building a mini-sumo robot using the IntelliBrain™ robotics controller is a great way for you to learn about robotics and Java™ software development. The RoboJDE™ Java-enabled robotics software development environment (included with IntelliBrain) allows you to download the example mini-sumo robot application discussed here into your IntelliBrain controller. With RoboJDE you can modify the example mini-sumo application or write your own mini-sumo program to improve the competitiveness of the robot. Mini-sumo is a competition between robots based on Japanese wrestling – “sumo” is the Japanese word for wrestling. Similar to traditional sumo matches, two opponents (robots) face each other in a ring named a dohyo – see Figure 1. The object is to stay in the ring while pushing the opposing robot out of the ring. The robot that stays in the ring the longest wins the match. Mini-sumo robots are small autonomous mobile robots designed specifically for sumo style competition. The mini-sumo robot competition rules restrict the robot length and width to 10 cm x 10 cm, but do not restrict its height. In addition, the robot cannot weigh more than 500 grams. Unlike larger battle robots, mini-sumo robots are not allowed to damage the opponent robot, they are only allowed to push it off the dohyo. All the hardware components you will need to build the robot discussed here are readily available. A mini-sumo robot can be assembled in a few hours or less.   • An important concern is that posting personal information on social websites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo is putting children at risk of abuse. Our survey of children at Key Stages 3 and 4 shows that a substantial minority (42%) of children regularly interact socially online with people they have not met face to face. This does not, of itself, indicate that children are naive or engaging in behaviour that puts them at significant risk. Rather, it shows that online interaction forms a different, though overlapping, social space to that of face-to-face friendships, involving friends of friends and people encountered in the online world, for example, through multiplayer games. Schools can have a role in educating children to use the new internet safely and responsibly. Teachers can help children to appreciate when they cross the line from normal and acceptable Web 2.0 activity, which may include posting some personal details online, to abnormal and risky behaviour. Currently, most children are prevented from engaging in any social activity on the web at school. While this may remove the immediate danger to children and protect the school or local authority against lawsuits, it may also store up further problems for society at large. Now that most children have home access, safe behaviours are essential, but a strongly protected online environment at school may not provide the opportunity to learn these. Online bullying, or ‘cyberbullying’, can be an upsetting experience and a recent phenomenon is the posting of hurtful images and videos on the web.

  • Launching the MGED Program To launch the MGED program, type mged at the Terminal (tty) prompt and then press the ENTER key. This brings up two main windows: the MGED Command Window and the MGED Graphics Window (sometimes called the Geometry Window). Both windows will initially be blank, awaiting input from you. To leave the program at any time, at the Command Line type either the letter q or the word quit and then press the ENTER key. 2. Entering Commands in the Command Window You can type in commands at the mged> prompt. Many experienced UNIX users prefer this method because it allows them to quickly create a model (which we sometimes refer to as a “design”) without having to point and click on a lot of options. This new format introduces an “x” at the end of the file extension (see Figure 1) and will affect compatibility between the versions for the following programs: Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Working in Office 2007 Documents created in previous versions of Office are able to be opened in Office 2007 without any problems. This is called backward compatibility. When you open a document created in a previous version of Office, you will see “Compatibility Mode” in the title bar of the document window indicating that Compatibility Mode is turned on. Note: With Compatibility Mode turned on, none of the new or enhanced features of Office Word 2007 will be available. This is so that users of previous versions of Word will have full editing capabilities. You have two choices: 1. Work in Compatibility Mode and not utilize any Office 2007 new features. 2. Convert your document to the Office Word 2007 file format and have access to the new and enhanced features in Office Word 2007. It is important to note that users on previous versions of Word may be prevented from editing certain portions of the document that were created with some of the new features in Office Word 2007.   • This guide provides an overview of Yahoo! Query Language (YQL) along with information on how to use YQL to retrieve data from Yahoo! Social Directory, MyBlogLog, and data from other Yahoo! Web services. YQL also allows you to retrieve data from external sources such as the New York Times as well as feeds such as RSS and Atom. This guide is intended for software developers who are familiar with SQL, MySQL, or Yahoo! Pipes. Yahoo! makes a lot of structured data available to developers through its Web services, like Flickr and Local, and through other sources like RSS (news) or CSV documents (finance). There are also numerous external Web services and APIs outside of Yahoo! that provide valuable data. These disparate services require developers to locate the right URLs for accessing them and the documentation for querying them. Data remains isolated and separated, requiring developers to combine and work on the data once it's returned to them. The YQL platform provides a mediator service that enables developers to query, filter, and combine data across Yahoo! and beyond. YQL exposes a SQL-like SELECT syntax that is both familiar to developers and expressive enough for getting the right data.
