  • Mac OS X System Hardening Guidelines for Faculty and Staff Desktops
  • System security is important! If you ask the question, “Who would want to break into this system or why would they want to?,” the how and why of this line of questioning could fill volumes. The “who” could be anyone whether they have legitimate access or not. The “why” is simple: free computing resources, access to data, damaging your system, embarrsing the university. A compromised system can quickly become a liability as it can affect the network or operations on other machines both locally and remotely. System security is a critical issue for the safety of your computer, the data on it, and possibly, the other computers on the network. This process of increasing system security is called system hardening. It is not a one-time event; it is a dynamic and reiterative process. Security holes are discovered daily in operating systems and programs. A secure system today may not be secure tomorrow. Some precautions taken now will save you from problems later. There is no “magic bullet” for securing a system. Every aspect of the system and its maintenance must be considered when securing it. Securing in layers while adding granularity at each level is the best approach. For example, physical security is one layer. An example of adding granularity to physical security is to use badge access to the area where a machine is located. Host security could be considered at the top layer. An example of granularity at this layer is making sure all unnecessary Internet services are off. One

  • NICMOS optical aberrations coma and astigmatism
  • Coma and astigmatism of NICMOS cameras have been derived using phase retrieval … Coma and astigmatism in NICMOS cameras are generally small, producing the Coma and astigmatism of NICMOS cameras have been derived using phase retrieval analysis of the data from the NICMOS focus monitoring program. Analysis of these aberrations has revealed that y-coma in all three camera experienced a systematic change over the NICMOS lifetime in Cycles 7 and 7a. A similar variation has been found for x-astigmatism in camera 2. In camera 3, the x-astigmatism increased dramatically after the FOM had been given a y-tilt of 16 arcsec. X-coma and y-astigmatism in all cameras did not show substantial systematic variations over the same period of time. The results of this study should help to understand the origin of the NICMOS optics instability. They should also facilitate interpretation of possible changes in NICMOS cameras when they are back to operations after installation of the cryocooler in Cycle 10. 1. Introduction NICMOS optical characteristics experienced noticeable variations since the start of the instrument orbital life in early 1997. These include not only the changing focus position Download Health Manual
  • Skype Guide for Network Administrators Manual
  • The Skype software and services provide individuals with a new, secure and innovative way to communicate with other people using the Internet as the medium of transport for messages, whether they are voice calls, text messages or other forms of communication. Skype is the world decentralized telephony network, but it provides far more services than just voice calling that carried over the public Internet. By using a compact client program, which is available in versions for several popular computer platforms,a Skype user is able to send or receive text messages, hold voice calls and exchange data files with other persons. Communications with other online Skype users are provided free of charge, while certain premium services, such as the placing of voice calls to standard telephone numbers, are available for a modest fee. Skype communications rely largely on peer-to-peer communications techniques in order to improve the quality of voice calls and to reduce the latency of data transfers between users. The term peer-to-peer, frequently written as P2P, is a class of software applications that rely on resources located at the network edge, such as the large number of individual personal computers that are always connected to the Internet, rather than relying on large and costly centralized computer servers. It is this aspect of Skype networking that makes it incredibly robust and tolerant of network failures:Skype has no single critical node upon which the service relies for its operation. Description of Skype services The utility of Skype services are found in the voice calling.. Download Skype Guide for Network Administrators Manual

  • IBM ViaVoice SDK SMAPI Developer's Guide
  • The IBM ViaVoice SDK for Windows, Linux and Macintosh(R) provides programmers with the necessary tools to develop applications that incorporate speech. It includes a robust set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that allows an application to access speech resources. It contains several utilities that enable developers to define and manage what the user can say within an application. There are also several sample programs that can help programmers as they develop their applications for speech. Finally, there are distributable runtime elements that are included with an application that uses IBM ViaVoice. IBM SMAPI supports only speech recognition functions. The SMAPI interface set is the native interface for the ViaVoice engine. This section contains a description of the overall architecture of ViaVoice. The heart of a speech recognition system is known as the speech recognition engine. The speech recognition engine recognizes speech input and translates it into text that an application understands. The application decides what to do with the recognized text. It can transcribe it literally for dictation, or it can act on it for commands. Applications can access the speech recognition engine through a speech recognition API. For ViaVoice, this API is known as the Speech Manager API, or SMAPI, for short. SMAPI is a conventional API. This means that the API is defined as part of the resource; in this case, SMAPI is defined as part of the speech engine. With an API, speech becomes a resource to all applications, just like any system resource (mouse, video, and so on). Any

  • Epson Stylus RIP Users Guide Manual
  • The Epson Stylus RIP software lets you use your Epson Stylus Color or Epson Stylus Photo ink jet printer as a PostScript 3 (Macintosh, Windows 2000, and Windows NT) and level 2 (Windows 95 and 98) compatible printer. It reads the Adobe PostScript files automatically created by the Epson Stylus RIP printer driver, seamlessly converts them into raster images, automatically prints them on your printer. You can use the Espon Stylus RIP with both Macintosh and Windows systems, in standalone or networked configurations. Adobe Post Script is the industry standard for high-quality graphic output. All the elements in a document - including text, graphic, and other images - are processed and reproduced using Post Script code. Then, when you print from an application such as QuarkXPress, the RIP software creates a raster image from the PostScript code and send it to your printer. Do you need PostScript? In many cases, you may not need the ability to print in PostScript, and for these occasions you should use the standard, non-PostScript driver that comes with your printer. Using the standard driver is also a good way to ensure that your computer and printer are connected and working properly, so make sure you install the non-PostScript Epson driver following the instructions in your printers setup documentation.
