  • PHP Leads Web 2.0
  • Everyone is currently talking about Web 2.0, it is the next big thing in the IT industry. But most people have only a vague idea of what Web 2.0 is about — and what it is not. They tend to think of Web 2.0 as a collection of websites and fancy web-based applications. What they don’t see is the shift of paradigm that Web 2.0 brings — and the emergence of new technologies under the surface. Defining Web 2.0 If you ask 20 people in the IT industry to define what Web 2.0 is, it is most likely that you will receive 20 different answers. This shows one of the main problems when talking about it: Web 2.0 is not a fixed standard or product, and the viewpoint of the individual influences his perception of Web 2.0. For consumers or journalists outside the industry, Web 2.0 is a number of applications, websites and interfaces — Google, Flickr.com or even eBay. From a developer’s perspective, it is a collection of APIs, formats and code. And a CIO or CTO of a large company might see a new approach for software architecture that helps him to improve his application landscape. But it is hard to write an article about a new trend without giving a proper definition of it, isn’t it? Though my definition is definitely subjective, I tried to find some least common denominators. In my opinion, Web 2.0 usually includes one or more of these elements: • Rich Web Applications are most likely built
  • Music-Driven Character Animation
  • Animations, whether they are in movies, television, or video games, would not capture the viewer’s interest if they were not accompanied by music. Music can set the tone for a scene and is generally added after the animation has been completed. It takes a large amount of work to coordinate a piece of music with a final animation, especially when specific movements must occur at certain times in the song. This paper describes a method of automatically synthesizing an animation that synchronizes with the input music. Our system allows the user to choose a piece of music and a character and outputs a synchronized animation that expresses the emotion and intent of the music through movement. The tempo, beat levels, and dynamic levels are extracted from the music and used to drive the animation. The user inputs a music file, a character created in Alias-Wavefront’s Maya, and a script file. The script file gives the user the freedom to decide what movements will be used in the animation, when they will be performed, and by which body part of the character. These mappings, as defined in the script file, allow the user to experiment with different ways of arranging movement and music to create a unique animation. Our animation system is designed for use by a wide range of users, not just those who are proficient at animation or musically inclined. Our technique concentrates on simplicity of movement and user control for creating a unique music-driven animation. Download pdf Music-Driven Character Animation
  • Programming with gtkmm
  • gtkmm is a C++ wrapper for GTK+ (http://www.gtk.org/), a library used to create graphical user interfaces. It is licensed using the LGPL license, so you can develop open software, free software, or even commercial non-free software using gtkmm without purchasing licenses. gtkmm was originally named gtk-- because GTK+ already has a + in the name. However, as -- is not easily indexed by search engines the package generally went by the name gtkmm, and that’s what we stuck with. gtkmm allows you to write code using normal C++ techniques such as encapsulation, derivation, and polymorphism. As a C++ programmer you probably already realise that this leads to clearer and better organised code. gtkmm is more type-safe, so the compiler can detect errors that would only be detected at run time when using C. This use of specific types also makes the API clearer because you can see what types should be used just by looking at a method’s declaration. Inheritance can be used to derive new widgets. The derivation of new widgets in GTK+ C code is so complicated and error prone that almost no C coders do it. As a C++ developer you know that derivation is an essential Object Orientated technique. Member instances can be used, simplifying memory management. All GTK+ C widgets are dealt with by use of pointers. As a C++ coder you know that pointers should be avoided where possible. gtkmm involves less code compared to GTK+, which uses prefixed function names and lots of cast macros. Download
