A Microsoft Romania initiative aimed at driving technology access and adoption, ARK is designed as a comprehensive collection of tools and resources addressing both the development and design aspects of building software solutions. I had the chance to chat with Microsoft Romania's Todi Pruteanu about the ARK initiative, and the interview below will provide you with a great insight into the Academic Resource Kit.
1. Just to get started, please tell our readers who you are and what is your role at Microsoft.Pruteanu: My name is Todi Pruteanu, my role is Academic Developer Evangelist at Microsoft Romania for more than 4 years now.
2. What is the Academic Resource Kit and how does it benefit students today?Pruteanu: ARK is a set of powerful development and design tools plus useful educational resources, such as documentation, code samples, curriculum materials, and tutorials that demonstrate the value of the Microsoft platform in technical education.The result is a fully loaded DVD that we've produced in a quantity of 100,000. We have disseminated most of the copies during the summer and in back-to-school campaigns, especially in High Schools and Universities. The product is described on www.microsoft.ro/ark (in Romanian).
3. Please tell us a little about the background of the initiative. In what manner has it evolved since its introduction?Pruteanu: It all started with a couple of facts we have in mind.On one side, we needDataSprings Tutorial on using Open Web Studio with Dynamic FormsWith Dynamic Forms and Open Web Studio, you can create a workflow to view / edit / delete records from a database table. Assuming you already have Dynamic Forms and Open Web Studio (OWS) installed on your Dot Net Nuke website, as well as created a page and imported both modules into that page. To access “Administration” control of OWS, you will need “HOST” privilege.
Choose “Administration” on the small drop down arrow of your OWS module.

The “Administration” panel of OWS should appear in a new Web Explorer window or tab and appears like Figure 2 below:

Now click on the “General” tab that appears next to “Home” and change the name of this configuration as well as other miscellaneous settings (NOTE: All these settings are customizable depending on what you like to achieve)

We have collected the requirements from different users and customers which were all converging to an expansion of existing environment to offer a much more ‘internet’ like service offering : simple APIs, mix of content and communication capabilities, graphical composition tools, open portal, widgets, developer communities, easy to share, try and comment set of services, etc. Based on that, we did an evaluation of different tools and technology and defined an architecture that could meet these expectations while leveraging existing IMS-SDP environments and built a proof of concept.

Today most service providers offer a mix of ‘walled garden’ services such as voice and SMS, which are developed/hosted/sold by the service provider, and ‘partner services’ which are co-developed and sold via some cross-selling models between the service provider and some business partners. As the market evolves with, on one side, more demand on the consumer side for personalized content and internet integration, and on the other side, demand for more flexible and dynamic business relationships, service providers need to explore new technologies and new business models to basically open up their infrastructure to enable more innovation and more usage of the underlyingBuilding eBay MashupsWeb 2.0 is the network as platform, spanning all connected devices; Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantages of that platform: delivering software as a continually-updated service that gets better the more people use it, consuming and remixing data from multiple sources, including individual users, while providing their own data and services in a form that allows remixing by others, creating network effects through an “architecture of participation,” and going beyond the page metaphor of Web 1.0 to deliver rich user experiences.
