DV video capturing using iMovie (Mac)This document describes how to capture video and export audio from a DV recording using Apple iMovie. You should know whether your recording is in PAL or NTSC format.iMovie does not copy the time code from the DV tape while capturing.This means that it’s not possible to re-capture exactly the same piece at a later point unless you manually look up the correct time codes on the tape.Final Cut Pro does copy the time code from the tape.
Requirements:
• Apple Macintosh with Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
• Enough free hard disk space (about 250-300 MB for 1 minute of video)
• Apple iMovie software
• DV camera suitable for your video format (PAL/NTSC)
• FireWire cable (4 to 6 pin)
1. Capture a DV tape
• Connect the DV camera (iLink connection) to the computer (FireWire connection) using a FireWire cable.
• Put the camera in Playback or VCR mode.
• Set the right preferences for iMovie in iMovie->Preferences...
• Deselect “Automatically start new clip at scene break”
• Deselect “Filter audio from camera”
• Choose PAL or NTSC for new projects
• In iMovie, select File->New project ..., give it a name and select a destination.
• Put iMovie in Camera mode (switch button from “scissors” to “camera”).
• Locate the beginning of the recording using the controls and click “Import” to start capturing.
• Cick “Import” again to stop capturing.
2. Export WAV audio
• Put iMovie in Edit mode (switch button from “camera” to “scissors”)
• Drag a clip from the Clip viewer (right) to the Timeline (bottom)
• From the File menu, select “Share...”

This method uses the extraction tool available in Photoshop CS2 (I'm not sure if it's available in Photoshop CS, but it won't be available in any version prior to this). Unfortunately, unless other softwares contain this tool (I don't know of any that do), the tutorial will only be geared to those who own Photoshop CS2 upwards.
This method removes the background from the image, rather than removing the image to a new background.
To begin, open your photo and locate your extraction filter - it can be found under "filter" in the menu (Select "Filter", then Extract) and open it up. This filter will not work on 16-bit images, so if you've opened a raw file, you'll need to change the mode to 8-bit (select "image", then "mode", then select 8-bit).
On the left are a series of tools - the first one is the "highlighter" for drawing around the areas you want to keep; the second is the paint bucket fill, next is an eraser, an eyedropper, two masking tools, and magnifying glass (for zooming in and out) and the hand tool (for moving your image around within the filter).
On the right are some options you can set: tool options are the brush size, the highlight color and the fill color, as well as a box for "smart highlighting". The contours are drawn as polylines and the drill holes are drawn as circles. All the layers for dimensions and notes can be turned off to reduce the clutter or they may remain on while AUTO-CODE is running. For this tutorial we will be turning them off. In AutoCAD, select the layer control list and freeze the layers that are not used for programming the part.
To freeze the layers, change the sun icon into a snowflake. The only layers you will need for this tutorial are 0 and DefPoints. After turning off the extra layers, you should only see the top and side views of the part. We are going to focus on the top view only.
Starting with a 4 by 6 by ½ inch stock material, the part will be clamped along the top and bottom edges. It is not necessary to show the clamps in AUTO-CODE. It is necessary that you know where they are located relative to the drawing.
For this basic part, we are going to drill the five holes indicated by circles and then cut out the rectangular area in the center using a half-inch end mill. The drill holes will be 3/8” (0.375”) in diameter. With the drawing open, the next step is to launch AUTO-CODE.
