  • Using Structures in C++
  • Structures form a very large building block with which to collect like data into one collective unit. They are a versatile data structure in which to clump data together in convenient little packages! They are essentially classes with all members defined as public access with no private or protected access modes available. They are most commonly used for conglomerating data and also support member functions, but that attribute is rarely used. I believe this is because when multiple functions are involved, the need for private and protected variables and functions increases. Definition and Syntax Arrays are one of the most widely used data structures in programming languages. One downfall of using such a data type is that one must use homogeneous data types, an array can only hold multiple items of the same type. Structures overcome this problem by allowing the programmer to have an unlimited number of items of different data types! Objects contained within the structure are referred to as a members. Here’s an example of what a structure declaration looks like: Here’s our general structure definition in Example 1. We use the struct keyword followed by a name for the structure. This name must be defined if we would like to make multiple copies of our structure. If we only need one instance, we can declare copyname as our instance name and disregard the name field. We can use listname[x] if we would we know that we will be immediately needing x copies of our structure. In Example 2, we have

  • Java and C# Generic Types and Methods
  • History of generics in programming languages The theory of generic types (parametric polymorphism) is by Hindley (1968) and Milner (1977). First programming language with parametric polymorphism is ML (1979); then Miranda, Haskell, Clean, ... First object-oriented language with generics is Eiffel (1991). Generics in Java • PolyJ (Myers, Bank, Liskov; 1997): Type parameters can be instantiated by reference types and primitive types; requires an extended JVM. • Generic Java (Bracha, Odersky, Stoutamire, Wadler 1998): Became Java 5.0 generics (plus wildcards, due to researchers at Aarhus University); runs on standard JVM. • NextGen (Cartwright, Steele; 1998): Type parameters can be instantiated by reference types, not primitive types; runs on standard JVM Generics in C# • Generic C# and new Generic Common Language Runtime (Kennedy and Syme, Microsoft Research Cambridge UK, 2001). • In November 2002, Microsoft announced generics for next version of C#; Redmond had been convinced ... • In August 2003, first alpha version of .Net Common Language Infrastructure with generics released. • Borland InterBase and Microsoft SQL Server : A Technical Comparison
  • Borland ® InterBase ® is a powerful, SQL-compliant database that is often considered for embedding in applications and for application-specific uses. Savvy developers and application architects who take the time to examine InterBase closely find that it offers substantial advantages over Microsoft® SQL Server™. Those advantages include: • Greater concurrency in a mixed read/write environment • More flexible trigger support • Faster crash recovery • Easier event management • More deployment options • Cross-platform support • Smaller size • Lower system requirements • Shorter training time • Lower training cost • Lower licensing cost This white paper discusses those advantages in greater detail. Today’s embedded and distributed database applications create an environment that consists of both the short read and update transactions typical of data entry systems and the long read transactions required for reporting and data analysis. When data analysis requires a consistent view of data at a point in time, the locks required by Microsoft SQL Server prevent other users from accessing the data being analyzed. The InterBase database engine is specifically designed to provide a consistent snapshot of your data at a point in time without blocking reads or updates by other users. With InterBase, readers never block writers and writers only block writers when two transactions try to update the same row at the same time. In addition, the InterBase concurrency model is completely. Download pdf Borland InterBase and Microsoft SQL Server : A Technical Comparison

  • Non-Programmers Tutorial For Python
  • So, you’ve never programmed before. As we go through this tutorial I will attempt to teach you how to program. There really is only one way to learn to program. You must read code and write code. I’m going to show you lots of code. You should type in code that I show you to see what happens. Play around with it and make changes. The worst that can happen is that it won’t work. When I type in code it will be formatted like this: ##Python is easy to learn print "Hello, World!" That’s so it is easy to distinguish from the other text. To make it confusing I will also print what the computer outputs in that same font. Now, on to more important things. In order to program in Python you need the Python software. If you don’t already have the Python software go to http://www.python.org/download/ and get the proper version for your platform. Download it, read the instructions and get it installed. Installing Python First you need to download the appropriate file for your computer from http://www.python.org/download. Go to the 2.0 link (or newer) and then get the windows installer if you use Windows or the rpm or source if you use Unix. The Windows installer will download to file. The file can then be run by double clicking on the icon that is downloaded. The installation will then proceed. If you get the Unix source make sure you compile in the tk extension if you want to use IDLE. Download pdf Non-Programmers
  • Buying Tires Guide: How to Get the Right Tire for You
  • Due to the large number of factors involved (such as speed, road conditions, inflation, vehicle maintenance, your driving habits, temperature), it is impossible to predict a firm figure for expected tread life. Tires should be inspected regularly and replaced when the tire is worn down. 1. Checking for Wear Tires are worn out when there is just 1.6-mm (2/32-inch) tread depth remaining. This can be measured with an inexpensive tread depth gauge, available at most auto supply stores. In the absence of a gauge, here are two quick methods to check to see if your tires are worn down to the point of replacement. A. The Tire Wear Bars Tires are manufactured with “wear bars” (see Figure 1) that indicate when there is less than 1.6 mm (2/32 inch) of tread depth remaining. When the tread is worn down to the point that the wear bars are flush with the tread, the tire must be replaced. Figure 1: Tire Wear Bars Exposed Wear Bars (replace the tire) B. The Penny Test The Rubber Association of Canada suggests this simple test to measure the tread depth on your tires. Place a penny into a tread groove with the Queen’s head down and facing you. If you can see the tips of the crown, it’s time for a new tire. Figure 2: The Penny Test Crown Fully Exposed (replace the tire) The Autosmart Fact Series 2. Understand Your Tire Needs Tires are manufactured in an overwhelming array of types and designs. Getting
