Most of the current methodologies for building ontologies rely on specialized knowledge engineers. This is in contrast to real-world settings, where the need for maintenance of domain specific ontologies emerges in the daily work of users. But in order to allow for participatory ontology engineering, we need to have a more realistic conceptual model of how ontologies develop in the real world. We introduce the ontology maturing processes which is based on the insight that ontology engineering is a collaborative informal learning process and for which we analyze characteristic evolution steps and triggers that have users engage in ontology engineering within their everyday work processes.

This poster aims to provide the concept of Web 2.0 and its relevant tools in language teaching and learning. An online blog is served as an information kiosk and indicate possible instructional design and applications to language education. By experimenting with the Web 2.0 tool in a participatory community, we are hoping language teachers will learn about appropriate tools ready to be used and further think about the relationship of Web 2.0 and the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and 5 Cs (communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities) as well as the Wallace’s framework for assessing its effectiveness

Professionals and Web 2.0

Web 2.0 refers to a trend in web design and technology that facilitates the publishing and sharing of information among internet users. The term was first used by technology commentator Tim O’Reilly in 2004 to describe a new direction in web use, distinguished by increased interactivity between users. Web 2.0 encourages the development of a participatory culture, where users contribute content back to the web rather than merely consuming it. Traditionally, websites consisted of static pages for commerce and the one-way delivery of information. Now applications such as blogs and social networks enable users to contribute and share information in ways that did not even exist a few years ago. Web 2.0 sites such as Wikipedia, MySpace and Facebook are now household names, with over half of our surveyed respondents acknowledging the use of these tools in their personal and professional lives.

If you share your photos on Flickr, you are an active user of Web 2.0. If you have a Facebook or MySpace page, download video from YouTube, subscribe to RSS feeds, or use Wikipedia, you’re also participating in Web 2.0. Web 2.0 describes a new generation of the web, designed around content created by users. High-tech industry people describe Web 2.0 sites as “collaborative”, “participatory and interactive”, “personalized”, or “community-driven” because these sites enable people to go beyond simply reading content provided by others. People can proactively share their interests and ideas with other site visitors.

As researchers, we instinctively reach for our spreadsheets to see if there is evidence to inform the hype about any online trend. Within 15 years the Web has grown from a group work tool for scientists at CERN into a global information space with more than a billion users. Currently, it is both returning to its roots as a read/write tool and also entering a new, more social and participatory phase. These trends have led to a feeling that the Web is entering a ‘second phase’—a new, ‘improved’ Web version 2.0. But how justified is this perception?
