  • Converting Geometry Between BRL-CAD and Other Formats
  • Since 1979, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory* has been developing and distributing the Ballistic Research Laboratory - Computer-Aided Design (BRL-CAD) three-dimensional (3-D) solid modeling package to support combat vehicle vulnerability studies and various other military and industrial applications. The software, which is now in its third generation, includes a large collection of tools and utilities, including an interactive geometry editor, raytracing and generic framebuffer libraries, network-distributed image-processing/signal-processing capabilities, and an embedded scripting language. In support of the package, a multivolume tutorial series is being written to assist users with the many features and functionality of BRL-CAD. Three volumes have been published thus far. Volume I provides an overview of the package contents and installation (Butler and Edwards, 2002). Volume II addresses the basic functionality of the package’s Multi-Device Geometry Editor (MGED) and offers a comprehensive list of the user commands available (Butler et al., 2001). Volume III discusses the modeling process as well as principles and techniques to help maximize BRL-CAD’s effectiveness (Butler et al., 2003). All of these documents are available for download at (U.S. Army Research Laboratory, 2003). The purpose of Volume IV is to discuss issues of compatibility and conversion between the BRL-CAD geometry file format and the formats of various other computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer-aided engineering (CAE) packages. Conversion is increasingly important for BRL-CAD users who must interact with a growing number of Government and commercial organizations involved in the research, development, testing, and evaluation of today’s combat systems. • Chart FX Shines for Silverlight TM Today
  • Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2008 introduces a whole new set of .NET technologies that will revolutionize, once again, the way you develop smart client and web-based applications; the most notable being LINQ, WPF and, of course, Silverlight. For most of us working in and around web application development in the business world, Silverlight is a big step forward; especially if you consider that it provides clean coding practices with extensible languages (e.g. XAML and C#). It also provides some of Visual Studio’s rich programming model that we have become accustomed to and can no longer live without; such as class libraries, debugging capabilities and IntelliSense among many others. Silverlight (especially from 1.1 onwards) can be used by .NET developers to create cross platform browser-based content with genuinely interactive client-side functionality that doesn't rely on a sticky tape of AJAX. Microsoft has been working diligently with third party vendors, like Software FX, to open Silverlight to the vast goodwill that Microsoft partners have to offer. Unfortunately, much of this effort has not been exposed yet as most vendors continue their Silverlight and Visual Studio 2008 integration efforts. At Software FX, we couldn’t wait to put our hands on Silverlight and try to build a Chart FX version that you could work with today. In the end, we were able to implement a Silverlight solution based on Chart FX 7 which will allow you to take advantage of tomorrow’s technology with tools you are familiar with today. In addition, this paper will help you understand

  • Using mental mill shaders in Maya
  • This document describes how to export shading networks and shaders from mental mill so that they can be used right away in the viewport rendering in Maya. A basic knowledge of how to work with mental mill or Maya is assumed. If you are not familiar with these tools, please take a look into the respective help documents of mental mill and Maya if you want to learn more about the applications themselves. Preparing the shader in mental mill 1. Create your shading effect inside mental mill by building a shading net- work that creates the look that you want to achieve. Once satisfied with the result, go to 2. “Scene > Scene Settings…” and make sure that the following items are set correctly: 4. created by adding a light shader node to the “graph view” . This does not yet create a light source. An instance of the light source needs to be cre- ated: Go to 5. “Scene > Scene Settings…” , click “Add light” and select the light shader of your choice. You can create multiple light instances from one shader which will share the input data like color, falloff, etc… . (Note that parameter sharing happens only inside mental mill. Outside the application each light instance will have its own dedicated set of parameters) If your shading network contains nodes that do reflections of any kind 6. (e.g. “Component_reflection”) you have to create an instance from an environment shader on the workspace. You must enable this environment shader by selecting it under “Scene
