Social networking websites have been steadily gaining popularity over the last few years. A recent OFCOM report (OFCOM, 2008) demonstrated that 22% of adults in the UK had registered with a social networking site (the figure is highest for 16-24 year olds and decreases with age). Facebook is, at present, the most visited social networking site and has over 130 million active users (Facebook, 2008a). This article shares the experiences of University of Wolverhampton’s pilot project into the use of Facebook pages for academic libraries.

Introduction An encrypted wireless network service has been implemented to offer users with their own laptops access to the University’s computer network. The service uses your QUB username and password for authentication. In order to protect your details, and the University network, the service will require you to install wireless client software on your machine. Queen’s has purchased a set number of licences so we need to record your email and staff/student number. You can still use your laptop on other networks, but you will need to disable the client software first. Once connected, you can browse the World Wide Web, and hence access your on- campus file store, and send and receive email.

Introduction Gambas is a Linux replacement for Visual Basic (but by no means it’s a clone). It is a free development software based on a Basic interpreter. To put it in short, it is a Basic Language with object extensions. If a RAD tool is required for say designing a GUI or a front-end to access MySQL or PostgreSQL database, then Gambas is the tool. KDE pilot application and network applications (with the Gambas Network ToolBox) can also be designed. Also Gambas has multilingual support and thus a program can be translated into many languages.
