The GO-Global Server environment is, by definition, a thin-client, 100 percent server-centric architecture. Because the GO-Global clients will be available for many different desktop platforms (Linux, Macintosh, and others), the GO-Global Server provides access to 32-bit Windows-based applications from virtually any desktop. The GO-Global Server allows you to roll out 32-bit Windows-based applications to a heterogeneous set of desktops while transitioning to a pure 32-bit desktop environment.
Unlike the traditional client/server environment, an application runs only on the server in the GO-Global Server environment. The GO-Global client performs virtually no local processing of applications. The GO-Global Server transmits only the application presentation—the Graphical User Interface, or GUI—down to the client. Each user logs on and perceives only his or her own session, which is transparently managed by the server operating system and is independent from any other client session.
From an application development perspective, one of the biggest benefits of the GO-Global Server is that the majority of existing 32-bit application programs run "as is"—no programming changes are required to run them on a GO-Global Server. This does not, however, mean that all existing 32-bit applications run equally well under GO-Global Server. As with the addition of any new operating system service, understanding how to design applications that take advantage of these new capabilities is important. It is focused on OpenOffice.org 2.x releases, but it should also be useful with 1.9 and 1.1.x releases. Graphics are, for the most part, those using the older style icons rather than the newer Crystal graphics, which are currently only in the en_US and de_DE releases of 2.0.x. Some are also from the 1.1.x user guide where they are similar to existing ones. All these will change frequently as the 1.9/2.0 cycle progresses. In addition, use of the OpenOffice.org Help facility is also covered.
Through Help, users can get detailed answers to all questions at any time by pressing (F1), opening the Help menu or clicking the Help buttons. More information on using OpenOffice.org Help can be found in Chapter 1, “Working with OpenOffice.org”. Other sources of support are available through the users@openoffice.org mailing list, the...

Data compression applies to individual tables and indexes within a database and comes in two options: ROW and PAGE. Backup compression is a new option when backing up a database to external storage. Both compression techniques can be used to reduce the amount of online storage required for databases and their backups.
Data Compression
Data compression can be configured for an entire heap (table with no clustered index), clustered index, non-clustered index, or indexed view. For partitioned tables and indexes, the compression option can be configured separately (and differently) for each partition.
The data compression option can be specified during CREATE TABLE or CREATE INDEX by using the new table_option DATA_COMPRESSION = NONE or ROW or PAGE. The data compression option can also be changed later through ALTER TABLE or ALTER INDEX with a (new for TABLE) REBUILD clause. Data compression affects the physical storage of columns within a row and rows within a page on disk and in memory. It does not change the logical attributes of the data or the way it is presented by the database, so there are no changes visible to the application.
Data compression requires more processing for select, insert, and update than for uncompressed data.
Furthermore, compression is generally more expensive than decompression. For these reasons, in most cases, Microsoft recommends that compression not be used on tables and indexes if the size of
