  • A Plan 9 Newbie's Guide
  • This is a quick-start guide to the user interface of the Plan 9 operating system based on my own experiences getting started at Coraid. For concreteness, it describes the setup actually used at Coraid. Some knowledge of UNIX and of commercial GUIs (Windows, MacOS, or recent Linux) is presumed. This is not a technical guide to Plan 9. This is only a "guide for the perplexed" to teach you just enough Plan 9 to get you started. The information given here is not complete my goal is to give you a useful subset. Thus I will skip some menu items and commands at every stage, the ones you do not need immediately. I assume that you will eventually read the official documentation Plan 9 is an experimental UNIX-like operating system developed by Bell Labs and released as open-souce freeware. It has requirements comparable to Windows 95 (e.g., 32 MB RAM on a 486) and is often used in embedded systems. That is bad Latin for, "More UNIX than the UNIXes themselves" (cf. Romanis ipsis Romanior) and sums up what Plan 9 is like. Plan 9 is based on the same ideas as early UNIX simplicity, compactness, and orthogonality but implements some of them differently, in ways that are (I would argue) closer to the spirit of UNIX than normal present-day UNIX implementations. Specifically: Instead of NFS, SAMBA, etc., there is normally just one file-sharing protocol, called 9P, and it is transparent to the user. You just carry your whole.... Download pdf A Plan 9 Newbie's

  • SAP Books: System Administration Assistant (BC-RRR) Manual
  • The System Administration Assistant was developed for Ready-to-Run R/3 [Seite 171] and is a high-performance tool that actively supports the SAP system administrator in all important tasks: • Customizing and Development [Seite 9] • Administrating and Operating your Systems [Seite 115] • Troubleshooting, Service and Support [Seite 142] Individual topics are arranged according in a hierarchical tree structure according to their execution period (daily, weekly, monthly), and the system type (development system or production system): All Tasks that were executed according to the execution period are marked in the System Administration Assistant as having been performed. In addition to extensive documentation, the System Administration Assistant lets you go directly to the R/3 transactions. Within the structure navigation you can dynamically adjust the tree structure display to the needs of the administrator. Irrelevant information (for example, non-available database versions or operating systems) are not displayed which makes the display easier to view and use. The menu tree contains a customer-specific area, that you can modify, and a non-modifiable SAP area. A new feature is the Alert Collector that informs you via e-mail about important problems such as errors in the system log. To call the System Administration Assistant in the SAP System, you can enter Transaction SSAA or choose Tools ? Administration ? Monitor ? System Administration Assistant. • Making FITS available on DotNet Applications
  • The Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) is a powerful and widely adopted means of exchanging Astronomical Data. There are also a great number of tools and libraries available on many platforms to facilitate working with FITS. We present the FitsLib 1, A library written to facilitate development of astronomical data analysis tools on the Microsoft.Net Platform. This has been developed as a wrapper over one of the very popular and time tested FITS libraries, CFITSIO. Fits.Net library merges the advantages of speed and ruggedness of CFITSIO with the language independence of the Microsoft.Net technology and a simple Document Object Model (DOM). We believe this library will be intuitive for .NET programmers. We present the design and usage patterns of the library in C-Sharp. We also discuss performance issues of the library. Finally we present a number of applications and web services, which are currently running on this library. We wished to use the CFITSIO package in developing image cutout services on the Microsoft’s .Net Platform in the C-Sharp language. This is a comprehensive library and we did not feel translation was viable, C-Sharp does allow use of managed C++. We set out to wrap a minimal set of routines in the managed C++ programming environment. This minimal set, however, grew larger as more functionality was required in C-Sharp. It became apparent that developing code with so many pointers and unmanaged data objects in C-Sharp would prove to be prohibitive, both for development and for maintenance. This led to the design of an
  • Apple Remote Access modem script basics
  • A modem script is a set of instructions that tells a computer how to interact with a modem so that calls can be initiated and received. To establish a connection, a script typically configures and then connects the modem. To terminate a connection, the script disconnects the modem by hanging up and then restores the modem settings that were in effect before the call. Each type of modem used with Apple Remote Access requires a modem script. Many scripts are provided with Apple Remote Access (see “Available Modem Scripts” in the Preface of this book for more information). If no script is provided for your modem, you must write one using Communication Command Language (CCL), a programming language that configures and controls your modem. This chapter describes the basic elements and structure of a CCL file. The following sections describe CCL script conventions for m instructions m comments m capitalization m labels m script resources m string formats m variable strings (varStrings) m match strings m script size Instructions Each line of CCL code consists of one instruction that is made up of a command and its parameters, if any. Modem commands are used as parameters of CCL commands. For example, the command write "ATDT^113" includes the following: write a CCL command ATDT a modem command ^113 a modem command parameter This command tells the CCL interpreter to send to the modem the modem command ATDT followed by variable string 1, and a carriage return (ASCII code 13). The CCL interpreter reads scripts from left to right and from top to bottom. It reads straight through, from beginning to end, unless you

  • A Quick Microsoft Access 2000/2002 Tutorial
  • This tutorial is intended for computer science students who need a quick introduction to Microsoft Access, but it will be useful to anyone needing such an introduction. To get the full benefit of this tutorial, you will need a computer running one of Microsoft Windows 95 or higher, Microsoft NT 4.0 or higher, or Microsoft Windows 2000. You will also need to have a copy of Microsoft Access 2000/2002 installed. Introduction Though Microsoft Access is NOT synonymous with database systems, there are more copies of Microsoft Access in use than any other database system. It therefore behooves computer science students to be at least superficially familiar with MS Access. This tutorial will guide you through some of the basic point-and-click stuff, and will even show you how to issue complex SQL (Structured Query Language) queries. You will open the Northwind Microsoft sample database and query it in various ways. This is a HANDS ON tutorial; it gives you step-by-step directions for carrying out simple tasks in Access. As you read, you should have a copy of the Northwind database open in Microsoft Access 2000/2002, and you should carry out the tasks yourself, exactly as directed.
