  • A Practical Dynamic Buffer Overflow Detector
  • Despite previous efforts in auditing software manually and automatically, buffer overruns are still being discovered in programs in use. A dynamic bounds checker detects buffer overruns in erroneous software before it occurs and thereby prevents attacks from corrupting the integrity of the system. Dynamic buffer overrun detectors have not been adopted widely because they either (1) cannot guard against all buffer overrun attacks (2) break existing code or (3) incur too high an overhead. This paper presents a practical detector called CRED (C Range Error Detector) that avoids each of these defeciencies. CRED finds all buffer overrun attacks as it directly checks for the bounds of memory accesses. Unlike the original referent-object based bound-checking technique, CRED does not break existing cde because it uses a novel solution to support program manipulation of out-of-bounds addresses. Finally, by restricting the bounds checks to strings in a program, CRED’s overhead is greatly reduced without sacrificing protection in the experiments we performed. • most of you know, most kinds of manuals have the tendency to dissolve into thin air. Most people who buy a motorcycle secondhand, don’t get the owner’s manual along with it. I did neither. Because Honda could not provide me a copy of this manual, I do not think that they will prevent anyone from copying it. I asked someone to provide me the manual and scanned it for everyone to copy and read. The original size of the manual is: 10.5 x 14.7 cm (5.8 x 4.1 Inch). Enjoy your motorcycle, riding and maintaining it. Download Honda VFR750F Owner’s Manual, Model 90-93 PDF

  • How Web 2.0 can leverage Model Engineering in Practice
  • With the rise of model-driven development, model repositories are intended to facilitate research in model engineering and consequently in domain-specific modeling. Model repositories are central places where all kinds of modeling artifacts (e.g., meta-metamodels, metamodels, models, and possibly transformation models) are stored and coordinated. They can serve as a platform for making available the specification of metamodels to others (typically necessary for domain-specific modeling languages) and for exchanging models, as well as a resource for teaching/learning materials. There have been started some intiatives for building model repositories, e.g., zoomm.org, www.kermeta.org/mrep, or the Atlas MegaModel Management (AM3) [1]. The latter one is hosted within the popular Eclipse environment and is a subproject of the Generative Modeling Technologies (GMT) project. The artifacts present in this model repository, furthermore, are organized into sets of models of similar nature called zoos, e.g. a zoo for metamodels and a zoo for transformations [4]. The AM3 zoos are continuously growing and provide a respectable source of information in the meantime. However, a more popular way of storing and organizing modeling artifacts is probably having a CVS like server software at hand. These repositories provide all means necessary to handle different versions of textual artifacts and let them compare syntactically. It seams therefore obvious to use existing tools also to store models as they can be serialized into the XMI format. Although versioning of models remains an open and challenging research field [11, 12], basic support for versioning models can be provided by CVS. CVS repositories can also be
  • Collaborative Storytelling in the Web 2.0
  • Prosuming is one of the magic activities of the Web 2.0. The idea that media con- sumers can become media producers has been validated with all its pros and cons in systems like YouTube and Flickr.com. There is a re-newed discussion about expert and amateur cultures or even cults [3]. Especially, making movies was thought to be an area where only teams of highly specialized experts equipped with a lot of money can produce high quality movies with a world-wide audience. But next to Hollywood other production centers emerged like ”Bollywood” in India or ”Nollywood” in Nigeria with local practices. YouTube has proven that amateurishly produced content can fascinate people on the Internet. We want to combine both worlds, multimedia production knowledge and Web 2.0 production knowledge shall be united for serving the knowledge sharing needs for a society who has not forgotten the power of stories, yet. In learning processes, the substantial challenge is also maintaining and extending learners’ expertise and knowledge. As stated in [2], way that people get information to solve problems is through their social networks. Moreover, people rely on other people to get information and learn. Some knowledge is easy to be acquired and mastered when it is not impersonal, because emotions might be involved and motivation is more clear. Storytelling is an efficient means to fulfill learning goals [11]. Knowledge is exchanged within communities when stories are told. Non-linear storytelling is kind of interaction between communities and media, in order to keep people by certain
