By now, everyone has visited a website that utilizes Flash multimedia within its design. Since 1996, the use of Flash has grown in popularity thanks to its ability to add animation and interactivity to websites. More recently, Flash has become an essential component in the prolific distribution of intrusive “pop-ups,” or web-based advertisements. Current search engines such as Google and Yahoo! are prevalent for searching the Web. Search in dynamic pages, however, is either inexistent or far from perfect. AJAX and Rich Internet Application are such applications. They are increasingly frequent on the Web (in YouTube, Amazon, GMail, Yahoo!Mail) or mobile devices and are offering a high degree of interactivity to the user, by seamlessly loading content from the server without the need to refresh the page. Current search engines cannot correctly index AJAX applications. This produces false positives and false negatives, because search engines do not understand the application logic that loads content dynamically. Crawling an AJAX application is a difficult problem. Since the user invokes events on the page, crawling must identify the different application states generated by the client-side logic.

Especially, making movies was thought to be an area where only teams of highly specialized experts equipped with a lot of money can produce high quality movies with a world-wide audience. But next to Hollywood other production centers emerged like ”Bollywood” in India or ”Nollywood” in Nigeria with local practices. YouTube has proven that amateurishly produced content can fascinate people on the Internet.

The Web is home to a vast number of collaborations, large and small, which are build on a common infrastructure. At the same time, a global effort is defining an emerging “CyberInfrastructure,” a necessary but not sufficient foundation for creating collective knowledge. Creating and building on knowledge requires more than the capability to “mash up” information, it requires clear understanding of the context and quality of the information underlying the knowledge. Wikipedia epitomizes the promise and limitations of the collaborative Web. What would be needed to “build a better Wikipedia”? New infrastructure is emerging that combines the best from the Semantic Web, general purpose “Content Management,” provenance tracking, and other technologies to fill the gap between contemporary Web technology and formal Cyberinfrastructure.
