  • How to create, save, and upload Microsoft Word documents as Web pages
  • Writing documents in Microsoft Word™ is convenient and produces good looking results, but posting these documents to web sites presents a problem. Students who do not have a copy of Word installed can not view the documents. When a person without Word left-clicks on the link to the word document, they will be prompted to download the doc as a file. If they figure out how to download it and then try to open it, they will be presented with several unfriendly looking windows asking them how to open the file. This is more than enough to scare off the average student. Fortunately, there is an easy way to make Word convert documents into web friendly HTML pages. HTML pages can be viewed in any modern web browser and students do not need Microsoft Word™ to view them. This document covers creating a web friendly Word document, converting the word document into a web friendly HTML file, and uploading that file to a Blackboard Vista course. A guide to creating web friendly Word documents Most basic word documents translate very well into web friendly HTML files with little to no modification, but there are a few guidelines that it helps to follow while writing the Word doc. Some Word elements translate easily into web pages. Try to use these elements to format your pages as much as possible. Elements that work well for the web include: • Alignment (left, right, centered). • Bold and italics. Try to avoid using underline if possible. • Font size and color. •
  • Simple Apache + Tomcat howto
  • How to setup a Web Server in a Linux or MS-Windows environement with Tomcat, Apache and the WARP Connector (WebApp). Be careful that the new versions (Apache 2 and tomcat 4) needs some particular changes. I will try to integrate them, but for now, check the Chapter 5 at the end of this document ! Besides, consider using Tomcat stand-alone : if it is fast enough, don't loose your time until the connector configuration is more stable. Enventually consider RESIN ($500) [http://www.caucho.com/] or Orion ($1500) [http://www.orionserver.com/], whish are much cheaper than the well known BEA WebLogic or IBM WebServer. The 4.0.4 version of Tomcat is very new. I tested it on Windows but still not on Linux. Besides, which WARP Con- nector version to use is not clear. The main problem is to make Apache and TomCat work together. This is done through the WebApp connector, which installation is not trivial. This can be done with the APJ connector (mod_jk or mod_fk2) too (and Coyote ?). But we will not be treat this here. It is a more "traditional" solution. I didn't find a lot of information which compared the APJ and WARP con- nectors, but from the little I have read, the WARP one seemed the best. (At least, I saw this note on the Jakarta Web site : [Using the WARP connector is recommended on platforms on which it is available .]) Download pdf Simple Apache + Tomcat howto
  • CREATING A HIGH-KEY LOOK TO YOUR PHOTO – PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL
  • In this tutorial, you will learn how to alter a typical color portrait so that it looks like a professional high- key studio shot. Here are the before and after photos: Open up the photo you want to use. Then desaturate your photo by clicking on Image / Adjustment / Desaturate. Now we will kick it up a notch by altering the curves. To do this, click on Image / Adjustment / Curves. You will need to adjust the input and output numbers of your curve. Hover your mouse over the diagonal line and then click once. The input and output number boxes will now be visible. Change the Input number to 171 and the Output number to 240. Then click OK In order to blur out the background a bit, we will add a Gaussian blur. First, make a duplicate of your photo by right-clicking on it in the Layers Palette You will now have two layers. The bottom layer is your original and the top layer is your duplicate. Now add a guassian blur to this duplicate (top) layer by clicking on Filter / Blur / Gaussian Blur. Change the radius to 30.0. In order to have just the background blurred and your subject’s features (eyes, nose, mouth) nice and sharp, we will add a layer mask to the blurred layer and erase some of this layer to expose the sharp image beneath. • Importing Maya Models into Crysis
  • T his tutorial will explain how to export static textured models (meaning no animation yet) from Maya into Crysis. I’ll update this tutorial as I learn more about the process and more tools become available. Big thanks to Psychojohno and Spiderdan for their tutorials which taught me a lot! What you need: • Maya 6.0 • The Far Cry SDK version 1.4 (you can get it from fileShack) • This script: CryExportUserInterface_001b.mel. (look for an updated version at http://seithcg.com/wordpress/?page_id=51) Important requirements: • Your object should be in its own directory inside of “Crysis/Game/Objects/My Objects/”. e.g.: “Crysis/Game/Objects/My Objects/toto/toto.ma” • The object’s textures should be inside the object’s directory. e.g.: “Crysis/Game/Objects/My Objects/toto/toto.dds”. But you can actually use any texture from any object, as long as the files are in the Crysis/Game folder. • For now the shader you use in Maya HAS to be either a “blinn” or a “phong” shader (NOT a “lambert”!). • Breathalyzer Model: 7008-B-001 pdf
  • The tritium breathalyzer is intended to simplify measuring the bodily intake of tritium in persons who have been working in areas where the release of tritium is possible. It does so by measuring the level of tritium in the breath. The system is useful for all tritium workers, as well as workers in CANDU nuclear power stations. Features · Easy and convenient to use · Quick operation (between 15 seconds and 1 minute) · Processes first person while a second person is using · Reports tritium-in-breath results by e-mail to operator and Health Physics simultaneously · Contains second ion chamber as comparator Description The tritium-in-breath analyser is housed in a handsome “kiosk” located conveniently for operators leaving areas of potential tritium contamination. It enables them to acquire an immediate measure of their bodily uptake of tritium, and simultaneously informs Health Physics so that speedy preventive and corrective action can be taken in the event of high uptake. The tritium breathalyser comprises a large (3 liter) ion chamber to maximize sensitivity while minimizing the time taken to fill with breath. It is compensated for gamma and background radiation by the provision of a second and identical chamber. The chamber itself is of wire cage construction, designed for minimum surface area and reduced plate-out. • SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office
  • Each day business users everywhere gather, manipulate and report information using Microsoft Office applications. But in most cases, the data that is needed for analyses and reports originates in, or is analyzed by, systems and applications outside of the Microsoft Office suite. Business analysts frequently need access to large data sources that exceed the limitations of Microsoft Office tools. They also may need access to sophisticated analytic techniques such as predictive analysis and forecasting capabilities that are not available in standard reporting packages. Yet they still need to present the results of their analysis in formats that others can share and understand. As a result, IT groups spend valuable time developing custom systems to channel data, reports and analyses from various systems into Microsoft Office documents, or integrating analytics into standard reporting applications. This leads to IT backlogs, long wait times for reports and analyses, and invalid analyses based on highly aggregated data. What if you could easily incorporate the powerful data management, analytics and reporting capabilities of SAS into your organization’s widely used Microsoft Office tools? With SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office, you can. SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office is a Component Object Model (COM) add-in to Microsoft Office that enables organizations to harness the power of SAS analytics and provides easy access to data directly from Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. • ePortfolio Mash Up with GoogleApps
  • Google Apps for Education: ePortfolio and Formative Assessment Workflow Schools and universities can set up free Google Apps accounts with their own domain name, where they can give all student and faculty acces to a variety of tools, including a GMail account, iGoogle portal, Google Groups for collaboration, and Pages, for creating websites. Each user can also use their GMail account to activate other Google services, such as GoogleDocs. Students and teachers have email accounts, with more than 2 GB of storage per account. Gmail is the web-based or POP-mail account that is also the common ID for other Google applications. Students have a portal with links to all of their Google files, applications plus other tools. Students can maintain a reflective journal (blog) of their learning activities and reflections with feedback through the commenting function that is a part of any blog tool. Students and teachers have space to discuss their work. Students create word processing, spreadsheet or presentation artifacts in GoogleDocs. All GoogleDocs files can be shared for collaboration with other students in collaborative projects, or with teachers for feedback. Documents are the standard word processing files, where students can create online, or upload from an existing Microsoft Word or Open Office word processing file. Spreadsheets are the standard spreadsheet applications which can be imported from an exisrting Microsoft Excel or Open Office spreadsheet file. Presentations are the standard slide show application which can be imported from an existing Microsoft Powerpoint or Open Office presentation file. Other people can be sent the URL for
