A Microsoft Romania initiative aimed at driving technology access and adoption, ARK is designed as a comprehensive collection of tools and resources addressing both the development and design aspects of building software solutions. I had the chance to chat with Microsoft Romania's Todi Pruteanu about the ARK initiative, and the interview below will provide you with a great insight into the Academic Resource Kit.
1. Just to get started, please tell our readers who you are and what is your role at Microsoft.Pruteanu: My name is Todi Pruteanu, my role is Academic Developer Evangelist at Microsoft Romania for more than 4 years now.
2. What is the Academic Resource Kit and how does it benefit students today?Pruteanu: ARK is a set of powerful development and design tools plus useful educational resources, such as documentation, code samples, curriculum materials, and tutorials that demonstrate the value of the Microsoft platform in technical education.The result is a fully loaded DVD that we've produced in a quantity of 100,000. We have disseminated most of the copies during the summer and in back-to-school campaigns, especially in High Schools and Universities. The product is described on www.microsoft.ro/ark (in Romanian).
3. Please tell us a little about the background of the initiative. In what manner has it evolved since its introduction?Pruteanu: It all started with a couple of facts we have in mind.On one side, we needGetting Fit with .NetFitNesse is a great Web-based collaboration tool for software testing, which can really help to test- drive the code and build a framework for holding the project together during big changes and re- factoring. It makes writing and running automated tests easy and allows test-driven software teams to share knowledge and expectations. Under the hub, FitNesse runs FIT (Framework for Integrated Testing). Both FitNesse and FIT are open-source tools, and together they are very popular as a testing framework in the Java community. Although FitNesse supports testing .Net code, some things don't quite work out of the box or do not follow official on-line documentation. However, the integration is stable, and I guarantee that the effort required to start using FitNesse is worth it.
This is a guide to help you get started with FitNesse. I will not try to make a case for automated tests or test-driven development here, nor explain all the benefits of FitNesse. Here are just a few advantages of using FIT/FitNesse combination for testing:
- It is easy to write complex tests
- Tests are easy to read and understand
- FitNesse promotes collaboration between team members (and customers)
- Test-specific code is very thin, and it looks much more like an integration layer then typical testing code
I will refer to FIT/FitNesse combination in this document simply as FitNesse – although it might not be 100% correct, it will simplify the story. You will be provided with a prepared AutoCAD (3rooms.dwg) model of three rooms, comprising walls, ceiling, floor and a door, as shown above. You will import the AutoCAD model to 3ds max. You will apply lights, materials, cameras, and a navigation helper as previously done in the Tutorial #1 – VRML room of primitives! tutorial. You will animate the door to make it slide, and then create a ‘touch sensor’ helper to control the door opening.
Finally you export as a virtual reality model in the form of a VRML file. You will view and interact with the VRML file (world, *.wrl) using a web browser. When completed you will be able to freely navigate around and view the internal spaces and click on the door to open it.
