  • Measuring web 2.0 Technologies with webTrends Marketing lab
  • Web 2.0 continues to play an increasingly important role in online business today as consumers look for a new and more engaging online experience and increased flexibility in how they interact with businesses online. In the business brief Measuring Web 2.0 with WebTrends Marketing Lab, Part 1: RIA and RSS Up Close, we demonstrated how to measure Web 2.0 technologies like Rich Internet Applications (RIA)—including AJAX and Flash—to improve the user experience. We also showed that measuring the effectiveness of Real Simple Syndication (RSS) can ensure that you successfully extend the reach of your web content. Our discussion of Web 2.0 wouldn’t be complete without addressing broadcast media, which is a market that’s emerging as an increasingly important content distribution channel. As an example, a recent eMarketer survey showed that more than one-third of the total US population viewed video at least monthly during 2006, and in three years, more than half of all Americans will be part of the online video audience. In this guide, we’ll examine the challenges marketers face when leveraging broadcast media technologies such as online video and mobile media to drive customer engagement and build brand loyalty. We’ll also focus on best practices for measuring and optimizing these technologies. Business Challenges Consumers have taken control over their online experience. It’s the consumer who dictates when, where and how they engage with your company. Marketing WebTrends departments are responding to this shift by investing more in Web 2.0 technologies to provide more choices and more media channels. This shift in

  • Pro Web 2.0 Application Development with GWT Excerpt
  • When I quit my day job in the summer of 2006 to bring an idea of mine to life as an Internet startup, I was faced with a huge number of questions and not a lot of clear answers. The excitement of starting a new project was soon tempered by the difficulty of choosing among the dizzying array of possible technical platforms and solutions. While the shelves were full of books focusing on each of the components of a web application, what I really wanted was a look at how all the pieces fit together. Too often, I found books that seemed like annotated versions of Javadocs, with helpful explanatory notes that setEnabled(boolean enabled) would set the enabled flag. At the other end of the spectrum were abstract architectural tracts that might have made for good reading but certainly didn’t give me a head start on the architecture. I wanted to see how these technologies worked when used for nontrivial applications; I wanted to see ugly problems and their solutions—I wanted a look at the source code of a modern web application. For those of us who learned HTML and JavaScript by using the View Source option, there’s nothing like getting your hands on working source code. So I had an idea: what if I created a company, a real, functional company, with a modern web site and then gave you the keys to the castle to go poke around? That’s the goal of this book, to give you the tour of
  • An eye-tracking study of information usage in Web search
  • Web search services are among the most heavily used applications on the World Wide Web. Perhaps because search is used in such a huge variety of tasks and contexts, the user interface must strike a careful balance to meet all user needs. We describe a study that used eye tracking methodologies to explore the effects of changes in the presentation of search results. We found that adding information to the contextual snippet significantly improved performance for informational tasks but degraded performance for navigational tasks. We discuss possible reasons for this difference and the design implications for the better presentation of search results. As an increasingly large fraction of human knowledge migrates to the World Wide Web and other information systems, finding useful information is simultaneously more important and much more difficult. In 2000, Jansen and Pooch estimated that 1 in 28 Web pages that users viewed were search results pages [11]. Today, search is among the most important activities that Web users engage in. Beyond the Web, search is a central activity for users of corporate intranets, specialized databases (from shopping to Medline), and increasingly for personal archives of documents and email. Given the importance and ubiquity of search, it is remarkable how similar almost all search interfaces are. Users typically type a few words into a query box and receive a rank-ordered list of search results comprising document titles, brief descriptions of the objects and some metadata about the results. On the Web, such interfaces are extremely effective, considering the incredibly
