Web 2.0 – More than Social NetworkingWeb 2.0 was meant to revolutionise the way people interact both at home and at work. Yet to date the technology appears to be firmly ensconced in the consumer marketplace where individuals are now highly familiar with the ease of collaboration via Facebook and the value of wikis and blogs.
Just how receptive is the corporate market to this new way of working? For the last 10 years technology has done little more than replicate the working practices of the past 30 years, simply adding speed and convenience. But users now want and need to see this consumer Web 2.0 style technology deployed in the corporate workspace to improve productivity, collaboration and information sharing.
But are businesses buying in to the concept of the new office environment based upon less hierarchies, team oriented working and cross functional contribution? Are they attracted by opportunities for interacting online with customers and suppliers? Do they understand the potential cost savings associated with web based technology delivery that drives out the need for desktop based applications, hence reducing support and maintenance costs? Or is the continued media focus on Web 2.0’s role as a consumer facing tool undermining its corporate credibility? Web 2.0 – More than Social Networking is a research study that looks at current levels of Web 2.0 adoption and understanding across the UK. On behalf of Parity, Bournemouth University asked businesses whether or not they had invested in Web 2.0, and the business reasons behind the decision making.
The results reveal endemic misunderstanding andMusic-Driven Character AnimationAnimations, whether they are in movies, television, or video games, would not capture the viewer’s interest if they were not accompanied by music. Music can set the tone for a scene and is generally added after the animation has been completed. It takes a large amount of work to coordinate a piece of music with a final animation, especially when specific movements must occur at certain times in the song. This paper describes a method of automatically synthesizing an animation that synchronizes with the input music. Our system allows the user to choose a piece of music and a character and outputs a synchronized animation that expresses the emotion and intent of the music through movement.
The tempo, beat levels, and dynamic levels are extracted from the music and used to drive the animation. The user inputs a music file, a character created in Alias-Wavefront’s Maya, and a script file. The script file gives the user the freedom to decide what movements will be used in the animation, when they will be performed, and by which body part of the character. These mappings, as defined in the script file, allow the user to experiment with different ways of arranging movement and music to create a unique animation. Our animation system is designed for use by a wide range of users, not just those who are proficient at animation or musically inclined. Our technique concentrates on simplicity of movement and user control for creating a unique music-driven animation.

Our animation starts out with a simulation of the ”Matrix Effect”, which displays glowing green letters falling down on the screen. Next, the camera zooms out and displays a square filled with domino stones, guide rails and a ball. The ball will fall down onto the guide rails, roll further down and hit the first domino stone, which then starts the falling of the first row of stones. When the last stone of the first row falls down, it will hit the + shaped item, which will turn around, hitting over the large purple stone, which will then hit the large field of stones and set the final action in motion.
