  • Why C# and Why .NET In The Undergraduate Information Systems Curriculum
  • Considering the rapid pace of changes in the software field and the limited courses that a student can take in languages, the question is which languages are crucial for students to learn in an undergraduate IS curriculum. This paper investigates the necessity of teaching C# and .NET in the undergraduate IS curriculum. It explores the pros and cons of .Net versus J2EE for applications development and differences between C#, C++ and Java, and which one may be the best language for teaching first programming course in IS curriculum. C# is Microsoft's latest object-oriented programming language developed for .NET platform and .NET is Microsoft’s latest platform technology for creating web services. C# is a C++ based language and was developed to provide portability for distributed applications over network and internet. Application development in .NET platform can be done in multiple languages including C#, C++, and Visual Basic. Programs developed in all of these languages are compiled to Microsoft’s Intermediate Language (IL) and executed within Common Language Runtime (CLR). We explain the core elements of .NET and how web applications are developed and run with this technology. .NET is not a programming language; it's a virtual-machine technology (similar to Java virtual machine technology) with a framework that provides capability to run a variety of web applications. The .NET framework class library provides a set of classes that provide essential functionality for applications build within the .NET environment. Web functionality, XML support, database support, threading and distributed computing support is provided by the .NET framework

  • IMS, SDP and Web 2.0 : Where are the services ?
  • This paper presents the results of a study on the leverage of web 2.0 technology and open business models to expand service providers’ IMS and SDP (Service Delivery Platform) and offer new services and service composition capabilities for existing business partners such as MVNO, ISV, ASPs but also sophisticated end users, so called “prosumers”. We have collected the requirements from different users and customers which were all converging to an expansion of existing environment to offer a much more ‘internet’ like service offering : simple APIs, mix of content and communication capabilities, graphical composition tools, open portal, widgets, developer communities, easy to share, try and comment set of services, etc. Based on that, we did an evaluation of different tools and technology and defined an architecture that could meet these expectations while leveraging existing IMS-SDP environments and built a proof of concept. From Walled Garden to Long Tail … Today most service providers offer a mix of ‘walled garden’ services such as voice and SMS, which are developed/hosted/sold by the service provider, and ‘partner services’ which are co-developed and sold via some cross-selling models between the service provider and some business partners. As the market evolves with, on one side, more demand on the consumer side for personalized content and internet integration, and on the other side, demand for more flexible and dynamic business relationships, service providers need to explore new technologies and new business models to basically open up their infrastructure to enable more innovation and more usage of the underlying
  • 2007 MacWorld San Fransisco Report
  • It’s time to report on the 2007 Macworld event held, as always, in January. The rumor mill was certainly cranking heartily before it and didn’t slow down all that much to date. So what were the rumors prior to Macworld? Leopard updates were thought to be a sure thing, espe- cially on the heels of Bill Gates giving his CES keynote the Saturday before, touting Windows Vista features and demonstrating some of the them. It was felt there was a very good chance that an “iPhone” would be announced, though bets were that it would not be called that. (Too bad Cisco!) There was reasonable expectation that updated versions of iLife and iWork would make their debuts. iLife ‘07 would have an new iWeb 2.0 and iWork ‘07 would come with a new spreadsheet application. It was also thought that there could be announcements related to new iPods, dual quad-core Mac Pros, and new, larger Cinema Displays. Download 2007 MacWorld San Fransisco Report

Jendamark Automation also provided the axle production lines for ZF Lemförder in China, building the BMW E90 and E60 series axles. Download BMW 3 series: Axle production PDF from www.pc-control.net
  • SimpleTech Secure Digital (SD) Card/Adapter User Guide
  • This is an Installation and User Guide for the SimpleTech® SD Card and SD Card Adapter. The SimpleTech SD Card is a highly secure super small form-factor card used in several devices including Digital Cameras, Personal Digital Assistants (PDA), MP3 music players, digital voice recorders, and other electronic devices such as cell phones, and pagers. The SD Card is a solid-state, nonvolatile removable and reusable mass storage which shows up as an ATA hard drive to the host. However, compared to ATA/IDE/ESDI hard drives with rotating discs, the Solid State SD Card is extremely rugged and very compact. The SD Card features high transfer rate for fast copy and download. The SD Card also features a Write Protect Switch on the casing to prevent accidental overwriting or erasure of the data. The SD Card complies with both current and future Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) portable device requirements. The SD Card Adapter allows the SD Card to plug into a PC Card socket. Therefore, the SD Card with the SD Card Adapter provides removable mass storage to thousands of hosts that have PC Card sockets, standard on many notebook computers. • Web Services – An Integral Element of Oecd's dot.STAT Technology Framework for Statistical Applications
  • The combination of evolving ICT standards that increase the interoperability between applications and the ever-increasing need for a more seamless access to and exchange of information is a major driver in the OECD ICT strategy. This paper describes the role and use of web services in the context of recent developments at the OECD to improve the accessibility of statistical information. It follows up on a paper presented at the 2002 ISIS meeting about “Improving Access to Statistical Information at OECD in Response to Users’ Requirements” and describes a technology framework – called “dot.STAT” – that has been devised for the implementation of applications that enable easy access to certain OECD reference data. The concepts outlined in this paper have been developed in close collaboration with the Statistics Directorate, specialised OECD-internal groups and task forces 2, as well as members of the SDMX Consortium3. The dot.STAT development framework is designed to help implement the basic infrastructure for the new OECD Statistical Information System. It incorporates a central data warehouse and is part of a broader statistical strategy, which depends on a glossary of statistical terms and a corporate meta-data repository. The objectives of the dot.STAT framework are threefold. The first aim is to offer a single platform/repository for multiple data/meta-data sets with different characteristics. Secondly it comprises a complete set of information broker tools to make replication from working/production databases as transparent and simple as possible. Thirdly, the architecture aims to offer basic building blocks for the (re)development of statistical production systems
  • The Linux Public Web Browser mini?HOWTO
  • The directions below will produce the RedHat (currently version 6.2 is used, 7.0 is in development) Linux system that boots into the bare (=no window manager, like gnome, kde or fvwm2) X server and starts Netscape Navigator (not Communicator, which includes Main and News clients). Upon exiting the browser the X server is restarted and the new Netscape process is launched as needed. The system is intended for Internet Kiosks and similar applications. Security is emphasized at all the stages of the setup. This HOWTO will be updated (maybe significantly) as long as more reports about the deployment of such boxes will arrive. The basic idea here is to give web access to people who wander by, while limiting their ability to mess anything up. This setup was originally intended for trade shows, but it might be applicable other places you want to have a web browser going without having to babysit a computer. Following these instructions does not make your system bulletproof or idiot?proof. You need a graphical browser This document assumes that you already have a running graphical web browser, such as Netscape Navigator, on your system. You should have permission to use your graphical web browser. If you want to use Netscape Navigator in a commercial setting, you can buy a copy with appropriate license through Caldera. You need to be able to add an account If you don't have the right to be root, get the system administrator to add the ``guest'' account and give you ownership of guest's home directory.
