ZoneBench User GuideThe instructions and explanations in this guide assume that you understand how to operate your Macintosh computer. You should, for example, know how to choose, select, launch, and drag by using your mouse. In addition, you should also understand how the desktop, windows, dialog boxes, buttons and file/folders work within the Macintosh environment. For more information about these items, please refer to your Macintosh User?s Guide.
SpeedTools ZoneBench is a benchmarking application designed to measure the read and write speeds over an entire local storage device. That device can be either logical (such as a disk volume which is actually a RAID array made up of two or more disk drives) or physical (such as your internal ATA disk drive). ZoneBench also has the capability to measure the speed of read-only volumes such as a mounted CD or DVD data disc. ZoneBench does not measure the speed of burning recordable CD/DVD discs, however.
Measuring speeds across an entire device is important because most storage devices do not maintain consistent speeds across their entire storage area. For example, all modern hard disk drives get slower as data is accessed further and further toward the physical end of the drive. Conversely, CD and DVD ROM discs get faster as you access toward the physical end of disc. (This is because CD's and DVD's are read starting at the center of the disc moving progressively outwards.

Whilst writing the EJB modules for our JGenerator product, we started punting an email back and forth containing all the issues we had with EJB. And there were many. Before we knew it we ended up with 101 howlers. In this article we present an edited version of the email. It isn't a complete list and there may be some overlapping issues. If there is enough interest we will turn it into a more formal analysis.
Before you flame us for chasing after your sacred cow with a big stick, all three of us have belonged to the "pro-Java" lobby since Java was in its first beta, and we still do. We have evangelised Java at every company we have worked at. However, EJB just presents so much that is wrong and messed up that we felt we had to speak out.

Client Systems
These systems represent client systems in the ML-500 workflow. They are networked to the server that is connected to the ML-500 printer. If you will be using the ML-500 WINDOWS printer driver to print, the driver must be installed on the clients.
Server Systems
The system connected to the ML-500 printer is considered the server. The ML-500 Printer Utilities are installed on this system. If you will be using the ML-500 WINDOWS driver to print, the port monitor and the printer driver(s) must be installed on the server before installing the printer drivers on the client systems.
System Requirements (ML-500 Utilities)
- 800 MHz PENTIUM III processor with minimum 512 MB of memory
- WINDOWS 2000 Professional (Service Pack 2, or latest), WINDOWS 2000 Server (Service Pack 2, or latest) with Services for MACINTOSH installed, WINDOWS 2000 Advanced Server (Service Pack 2, or latest) with Services for MACINTOSH installed, or WINDOWS XP Operating Systems
- Color monitor with an 800 x 600 pixel resolution
- OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 card and IEEE 1394 cable for connecting to printer included
- A minimum of 10 GB available storage on hard drive

So André sat down and wrote XOSD to display track-names in XMMS.
Over time features were added and XOSD became a stand-alone library, rather than just a plug-in for XMMS; eventually, XOSD 1.0 was released.

This project has applied such research to focus on the issue of introductory computer programming for physics students. It is concluded that teaching programming is both necessary and beneficial for physics students and may improve their performance on their degree. The choice of programming language for an introductory course is considered, and the Python programming language is selected. Questionnaire results from physics and engineering introductory courses are presented, and conclusions drawn from these results. The report finishes by presenting best practice suggestions to improve the enthusiasm and retention of material by the students.
As early as 1979 it was pointed out by Lemos [1] that there was a lack of structure in the approach to teaching programming; with many different methods used and no empirical research to distinguish which was most helpful for the student. Lemos stated that most of the literature consists of subjective opinions on the most effective methods of instruction for a given programming language and called for dedicated research in this field. In the intervening years some work has been done in this field, however as will be seen in section 2.1 there is still a distinct lack of empirical research.
