Program in ArcGIS using the .Net framework and C#This guide assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of what ArcGIS and the .Net framework is, as well as a rudimentary understanding of how object oriented programming works. For more information about .Net and object oriented programming, follow the links in Appendix B.
In order to program with ArcGIS there are two products that you will need to have installed on your computer. First, you must have either ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS ArcInfo or else have the ArcGIS Engine installed. Once these one of these are installed you will be able to run the code you compile in the ArcGIS environment. The other ArcGIS product you need is the Developer Tools for Microsoft.Net that provides access to the .Net framework and the functions that ESRI has made for .Net as well as the Developer tools that install an API for ArcObjects. It is also important to make sure that your software is up to date, which you can do by checking the ESRI website to see if there are updates or service packs for your software (this tutorial was written using ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack1).
The other major required software is a C#.Net compiler. I recommend using Microsoft Visual Studio, because ESRI has created various resources to make coding faster and easier for that environment. If you are looking for a free compiler you can try using the Microsoft Visual Studio C# Express edition, or the SharpDevelop program which is an open-source initiative. The next step is to remove the corks (red arrows) and unscrew the two 7mm alen (imbus) screws that hold the caliper. The screws are under the corks – pic2 To get the screws out, insert the 7mm alen key in and unscrew them out.
This is how the screws looks like. The white arrow points where the other one is. When the screws are out, you need to disconnect the pad wear cable. It is on one of the sides of the car (HGT-both sides).
Connector is circled red. After that is done, pull the caliper toward you by hand. Next step is to remove the pad wear cable from its holder on the caliper. After you remove it, it should dangle freely like this.
Then pull off the caliper in the yellow arrow direction. After you have pulled the caliper off, you will be left with one pad on the caliper holder and one on the caliper piston.

We want to make it clear in discussing these issues that we are only speaking from the point of view of novice programmers. Experienced programmers might well have very different views.
First, console input presents a problem: input() is not appropriate for strings and raw_input() either requires dealing with types and typecasting or puts us back in the realm of magic. In our experience getting input is one of the largest sources of errors for Python beginners. This has lead to our writing a simple input function which returns an integer, float or string, depending on the input string. (See example on http://tech.canterburyschool.org/pycon/) This function handles our students' needs but does have the disadvantage of not being part of the language “out of the box”.
A second and related issue for novices is the way Python handles types. In contrast to the rigid insistence upon type compatibility found in C++ and Java, Python seems less predictable to the beginner. Type compatibility is not needed for assignment, is needed logically, but not syntactically, for the comparison and equality operators, and is required for the + operator. Confusion about this behavior is probably the second most common source of errors for inexperienced programmers.
Finally, in common with C++ and Java, Python has different operators for assignment and equality, even though its syntax enforces correct usage.
