  • Installing Fedora Core 1
  • There are three basic parts to installing FC: downloading and creating CDs, the initial installation process, and final setup. Fedora Core comes as a series of three ISO files, each about 650 MB in size. After downloading and verifying the files, you'll want to put them onto CDs. Most every version of Windows comes with CD-burning software, so I won't belabor that process here. It's not quite as straightforward on a Linux box, though, so I'll provide explicit details for creating CDs with Linux. Once you've got your three CDs, it's time to install. The first CD is bootable, so, assuming that your machine can boot from a CD, you just stick it in and restart the machine. A wizard starts, first offering to check the CDs for errors, and then guiding you through about 16 screens that allow you to configure your machine and set up preferences. Most of these screens can be navigated simply by clicking "Next", as the wizard will detect and display the appropriate choice for you. After completing the wizard, the installation starts, and you'll be prompted to insert CD #2 and #3 when necessary. Once all the files have been transferred and the system has been installed, the machine will restart and you'll spend a few more minutes making a few last tweaks and choosing settings. Upon completion, you've got a Linux box ready to go. Download pdf Installing Fedora Core 1

  • Debugging PHP using Eclipse and PDT
  • The PHP Development Tools (PDT) plug-in, when installed with Eclipse Europa, gives you that ability to quickly write and debug PHP scripts and pages. PDT supports two debugging tools: XDebug and the Zend Debugger. Learn how to configure PDT for debugging PHP scripts and discover which perspectives you use when taking closer looks at your scripts. This tutorial demonstrates how to configure the PHP Development Tools (PDT) plug-in for Eclipse to debug your PHP scripts. It also introduces the perspectives you'll use (namely, PHP Debug) when taking closer looks at your PHP scripts. Objectives After completing this tutorial, you'll be able to set up either XDebug — an open source project that allows you to debug executable scripts and scripts running on a Web server — or the Zend Debugger in Eclipse using the PDT project to develop PHP applications. You'll understand the various parts of the PDT project's PHP Debug perspective and learn how to set up, view, and work with breakpoints. You also learn how to inspect the values of variables as you are stepping through the code, as well as how to debug PHP Web applications on your local server so you can run through your PHP Web application with the debugger. Prerequisites To get the most out of this tutorial, you should have done a bit of PHP development. But what matters more is that you've done software development in general. You'll understand the debugging concepts better if you're familiar with debugging any other language. I wrote this to be helpful
  • What is Web 2.0? Ideas, technologies and implications for education
  • Within 15 years the Web has grown from a group work tool for scientists at CERN into a global information space with more than a billion users. Currently, it is both returning to its roots as a read/write tool and also entering a new, more social and participatory phase. These trends have led to a feeling that the Web is entering a ‘second phase’—a new, ‘improved’ Web version 2.0. But how justified is this perception? This TechWatch report was commissioned to investigate the substance behind the hyperbole surrounding ‘Web 2.0’ and to report on the implications this may have for the UK Higher and Further Education sector, with a special focus on collection and preservation activities within libraries. The report argues that by separating out the discussion of Web technologies (ongoing Web development overseen by the W3C), from the more recent applications and services (social software), and attempts to understand the manifestations and adoption of these services (the ‘big ideas’), decision makers will find it easier to understand and act on the strategic implications of ‘Web 2.0’. Indeed, analysing the composition and interplay of these strands provides a useful framework for understanding its significance. The report establishes that Web 2.0 is more than a set of ‘cool’ and new technologies and services, important though some of these are. It has, at its heart, a set of at least six powerful ideas that are changing the way some people interact. Secondly, it is also important to acknowledge that these ideas are not necessarily
  • Praxis Script Programming Guide
  • This guide is intended to for use with the PRAXIS v2.0 manual in the development of custom scripts which can be run within the PRAXIS measurement system. Praxis Scripts are Windows applications in themselves that run from within PRAXIS. They include visual forms on which you can place familiar user interface components like buttons, edit boxes, sliders, text editors, images, etc., and easily give them high level functionality by setting properties and writing code in DelphiScript (based on Borland Delphi) or VBScript (a language based on Microsoft Visual Basic). The Scripts are developed using the Liberty Script Designer, which is an additional, separate application that is installed along with PRAXIS and which can be started from within Praxis. The Script Designer can be started by using the Scripts -> Design a Script menu on the Main Form. Although Praxis was developed entirely using Borland's Delphi language, and the components used are Delphi "VCL" components, other languages such as VBScript and JavaScript can be used to develop code if you wish. Most procedures and functions that are built into Delphi are also usable in a PRAXIS script, even when the script is programmed in languages other than DelphiScript. The Script Designer provides specific support, such as automatic generation of skeletal scripts, for the VBScript and DelphiScript languages. Download pdf Praxis Script Programming Guide

This hack explores the ABC model of emotion pioneered by 226 | Chapter 7, Clarity #57 Learn Your Emotional ABCs HACK H A C K #57 Learn Your Emotional ABCs Hack #57 Mental and emotional clarity reinforce each other, so don't ignore your emotio in your quest to be a better thinker. Greater clarity is just a few steps away. The ABC model of emotion, widespread in contemporary psychotherapy, holds that it is not an activating (A) event, such as rejection by a friend or lover, that causes you emotional coequences (C) such as depression; rather, the linchpin is your invisible beliefs (B) about the event that come in between A and C. Fortunately, it's often easier to intentionally change beliefs than emotio. Since at least the time of the ancient Stoics, some have believed that our cir- cumstances don't control whether we're happy, but our thoughts about them do. Our reasoned thoughts and beliefs form a kind of buffer between reality and our private selves—in theory. In practice, our thoughts often don't buffer us from events we don't like so
