  • Brains, unlike artificial neural nets, use sym- bols to summarise and reason about perceptual input. But unlike symbolic AI, they “ground” the symbols in the data: the symbols have meaning in terms of data, not just meaning imposed by the outside user. If neural nets could be made to grow their own symbols in the way that brains do, there would be a good prospect of combining neural networks and symbolic AI, in such a way as to combine the good features of each. It is argued that the secret of growing symbols in neural nets lies in cluster analysis. Algorithms for clustering, many of them naturally implementable in neural hardware, would produce clusters, which are discrete entities summarising data that have all the properties of symbols. The war between symbolic artificial intelligence and its neural net rival continues because each has strengths that the other lacks, and it has proved impossible to combine them successfully. It is agreed that symbolic systems work well on discretely structured problems, like chess, and give a transparent understanding of what they are doing, which allows their use in new situations through adding and deleting rules. But it is difficult to make them adaptive to data, especially in situations where there is only data to go on, and almost no understanding via rules, such as face recognition. Scaling up from toy to real problems is also hard. Neural nets, on the other hand, are strong where symbolic AI is weak, and vice versa. They adapt easily

  • Fortran is the most widely used programming language in the world for numerical applications. It has achieved this position partly by being on the scene earlier than any of the other major languages and partly because it seems gradually to have evolved the features which its users, especially scientists and engineers, found most useful. In order to retain compatibility with old programs, Fortran has advanced mainly by adding new features rather than by removing old ones. The net result is, of course, that some parts of the language are, by present standards, rather archaic: some of these can be avoided easily, others can still be a nuisance. This section gives a brief history of the language, outlines its future prospects, and summarises its strengths and weaknesses. Fortran was invented by a team of programmers working for IBM in the early nineteen-fifties. This group, led by John Backus, produced the first compiler, for an IBM 704 computer, in 1957. They used the name Fortran because one of their principal aims was “formula translation”. But Fortran was in fact one of the very first high-level language: it came complete with control structures and facilities for input/output. Fortran became popular quite rapidly and compilers were soon produced for other IBM machines. Before long other manufacturers were forced to design Fortran compilers for their own hardware.   • This tutorial shows how to create a bone diagram. A bone diagram represents relations between endpoints and surface interaction. A bone is transformed by a force field, and the skin transforms with the bone according to its settings. It can be usefull for creating diagrams that interact with for example a ground plane or planes that are transformed into a design. It covers the basics of fields kinetics and skin. First we need to create the bones and make them interact with a force field, the forcefield represents an environmental constant. We want each end joint to interact with a different force (for example a different program aspect) To create the bones we need to set them up carefully, it is wise in this case to use the Snap Grid.
