The combination of evolving ICT standards that increase the interoperability between applications and the ever-increasing need for a more seamless access to and exchange of information is a major driver in the OECD ICT strategy. This paper describes the role and use of web services in the context of recent developments at the OECD to improve the accessibility of statistical information. It follows up on a paper presented at the 2002 ISIS meeting about “Improving Access to Statistical Information at OECD in Response to Users’ Requirements” and describes a technology framework – called “dot.STAT” – that has been devised for the implementation of applications that enable easy access to certain OECD reference data. The concepts outlined in this paper have been developed in close collaboration with the Statistics Directorate, specialised OECD-internal groups and task forces 2, as well as members of the SDMX Consortium3.

“Web 2.0″ was originally coined by O’Reilly Media in 2004. Web 2.0 properties are perceived as harbingers of second-generation Web usage, such as interactive communities and hosted services that facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.
“Web 2.0″ is also one of the most overused and abused terms on Wall Street, sublimely crafted to reinvigorate investing in online entities that remain rooted in Web 1.0 technologies. Even though much of the machinery behind the Web remains relatively unchanged — just upgraded, versioned, and rebundled — people surfing the Web have changed. Web netizens have progressed beyond solely seeking information to embracing greater levels of interaction, even if it’s virtual. It’s not enough anymore to deliver goods as promised from an e-commerce site. Merely informing your online audience of breaking news is passé, and amusing visitors with quirky applets is seriously behind the times.

Within 15 years the Web has grown from a group work tool for scientists at CERN into a global information space with more than a billion users. Currently, it is both returning to its roots as a read/write tool and also entering a new, more social and participatory phase. These trends have led to a feeling that the Web is entering a ‘second phase’—a new, ‘improved’ Web version 2.0. But how justified is this perception?

If you’re one of the four, five, maybe even six people
out there on the Internet who want to set up an A/UX web server, then this guide is for you. To make things simpler, this document follows a few standard conventions. Text in Courier is reserved for terminal sessions. This provides a sample walkthrough of commands to type and their usual responses. For example: A larger courier font is used to denote relevant commands mid-sentence, such as newconfig, in order to separate the command from the rest of the text. File and path names, such as /etc/inittab, are in bold. Individual references to filenames without paths like inittab aren’t.

hen creating animations, you should be very careful what you do with the FloorRef. When walking or running, the character should stay at a constant height from the FloorRef object. When jumping, the Character should increase it’s distance from the FloorRef object to give the appearance of translation away from the floor. Characters should ALSO have a “stationary root” that only moves relative to the floor reference (e.g. for walking, jumping etc.) but that does not move constantly (i.e. in an idle animation the root should not move). This is very important if you wish to use your Characters with the Virtools Mulituser Pack, or the dead reckoning algorithm used for predicting distributed objects will not work correctly.
