Likewise, instructional designs are developed to enable and motivate students at center stage to learn effectively and willingly. However, from our ten years of experience in promoting an e-Learning system called TIES in higher education, we have realized that an “e-Teaching” environment for teachers to teach effectively and happily needs to be founded as a prerequisite to successful e-Learning. We further argue that “e-Teaching” can be developed to be a central idea that is actually more important than e-Learning. The reasons are as follows: (1) teaching is more fun and active than learning, (2) teaching requires more creative and imaginative brain work than learning, (3) teaching creates more value than learning, and (4) the Web is growing as a global brain harnessing intellectual knowledge. A seemingly innocuous shift of the center of attention from students to teachers may transform e-Teaching as a current Web 0 status to even Web 2.1, if we may borrow a trendy word from a recent Web 2.0 hype. Increasingly, e-Leaning today is defined by terms like Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the context of ubiquitous IT network society.   • For example, runlevel 3 is configured in mainstream distributions such as Red Hat, Fedora Core and SuSE to provide full multi-user capabilities with networking and a text-based interface. Runlevel 5 is the same as runlevel 3, but with an additional step of loading a graphical user interface for the user. Many servers are configured to boot into runlevel 3 as part of their normal operation, since they don't need a GUI to do their job. The concept of the plumbing behind runlevels is easy to understand. Generally speaking, there is a collection of programs used to start up a machine (and another set of programs that are run during machine shutdown). Different runlevels invoke subsets of these programs. The definition of which programs are included in one runlevel's subset versus another's are contained in a series of directories named /etc/rcN.d, where N runs from 0 to 6, matching the various runlevels available.   • This document describes how to use Microsoft Visual Basic to quickly and easily create a graphical front-end for a CSIM19 simulation written in C. The example used in this document is a simple service center phone bank. The source for this example is included with this document. You will not be able to compile the source yourself unless you own the CSIM19 libraries. This document assumes that readers are reasonably familiar with CSIM19 and basically proficient in Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft Visual C++. Obviously the methods described here are also applicable in other development environments, as long as users know their preferred development tools well enough. The first step in this process is to create your CSIM model as you would normally. In our example, the model was first written and compiled as a standard Win32 console application using Microsoft Visual C++ 6. The original console program is included in this tutorial package and is called phone.exe. In this stage it is easy to find and fix all the bugs in the model itself without worrying about problems anywhere else. It is important to verify that the model gives the correct output at this stage, so that it will be easier to catch any bugs in the GUI later. At this point we can design the Visual Basic interface.   • The Statistical Seismology Library (SSLib) is a collection of earthquake hypocentral catalogues and R functions to analyse the catalogues. The analyses include graphical data displays, fitting of point process models, estimation of fractal dimensions, and rou- tines to apply the M8 Algorithm to given datasets. The Statistical Seismology Library is written in the R language, and consist of a number of R packages. Each package has its own Users Manual that contains documentation for all functions within that package. This Users Guide contains a sequence of examples, showing how the functions can be implemented and how they are related to each other. The guide is divided into three parts. The first part gives an introduction to the R language, emphasising those features that are important for an understanding of SSLib. In the second part, examples are given for each package in SSLib, showing how the functions are related to each other. The third section is more technical, and really relates to system administration: installation of software, software modification, and inclusion of local earthquake catalogues.
