  • S510M Color Image Scanner for Macintosh Operator's Guide
  • ScanSnap S510M is a feature-rich, office-ready color image scanner. It is designed to help you improve productivity and solve problems in scanning. The ScanSnap scanner has the following features: ? Converting paper documents into PDFs by pressing a single button! You can turn the documents cluttering up your desk into PDFs, and manage and archive them on your computer. ScanSnap S510M can automatically detect whether the documents are color or black-and-white, so that the size of scanned image files can be made smaller when scanning color and black-and-white documents mixed in a batch. In addition, the scanner can automatically remove blank pages in documents to further reduce the size of files. ? Effortless scanning! Double-sided color documents in A4 or letter size can be scanned at a speed of about 18 sheets/minute (when used with a computer with a PowerPC® G5 processor of 1.6GHz or higher running Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later and with Scan mode Normal, Color mode Auto, and Compression rate 3).(*1) ? Small desktop footprint! Having a footprint smaller than a sheet of A4 or Letter size paper, the ScanSnap scanner can be left on your desk all the time. (*1) - Depending on the document types, the scanning speed may slow down when scanning is performed in "B&W" (Black-and-White) mode (because the data of scanned color documents is converted into monochrome data). For example, when scanning color brochures in "B&W" mode in Normal (Fastest) quality at a compression rate of 3, its scanning speed is about 12 sheets/minute. - When "Allow automatic blank page removal" or

  • An Architecture for Internet Data Transfer
  • This paper presents the design and implementation of DOT, a flexible architecture for data transfer. This architecture separates content negotiation from the data transfer itself. Applications determine what data they need to send and then use a new transfer service to send it. This transfer service acts as a common interface between applications and the lower-level network layers, facilitating innovation both above and below. The transfer service frees developers from re-inventing transfer mechanisms in each new application. New transfer mechanisms, in turn, can be easily deployed without modifying existing applications. We discuss the benefits that arise from separating data transfer into a service and the challenges this service must overcome. The paper then examines the implementation of DOT and its plugin framework for creating new data transfer mechanisms. A set of microbenchmarks shows that the DOT prototype performs well, and that the overhead it imposes is unnoticeable in the wide-area. End-to-end experiments using more complex configurations demonstrate DOT’s ability to implement effective, new data delivery mechanisms underneath existing services. Finally, we evaluate a production mail server modified to use DOT using trace data gathered from a live email server. Converting the mail server required only 184 lines-of-code changes to the server, and the resulting system reduces the bandwidth needed to send email by up to 20%. • Ruby Programming - Delightful Languages
  • This is a brief recounting of my initial impressions of and experience with the Ruby programming language and its community. In many ways Ruby strikes the same chord in me that Perl did a decade or more ago. I show Ruby from a Perl perspective. When I first encountered Perl, I found the language to be a little strange coming from a C background. From time to time I would use Perl to write things I would have written in C or shell, and soon Perl was my tool of choice for many tasks. Ruby is having a similar effect on me. Sometimes I prototype Perl code in Ruby, sometimes I just use Ruby for the sake of seeing if I arrive at a different solution using a di?erent language. Like Perl, Ruby makes programming fun, but in a different way. Ruby borrows features from many languages, and one of those is Perl. I can simply translate Perl code into Ruby if I want. I will use the Soundex function as an example, as the algorithm is simple and my Perl implementation will reveal something about my abilities as a programmer. The Soundex algorithm is a simple hashing of the letters of a word to a four character code which brings similar sounding words to the same code. In 1994 I posted a routine, shown in code listing 1, to comp.lang.perl which shows both the simplicity of the Soundex algorithm and my Perl style at its worst (or best). Download pdf

  • Teamprise Client Suite
  • The introduction of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) and Team Foundation Server (TFS) changed the practice of Application Lifecycle Management throughout the software development industry. Enterprise organizations now have an affordable, full-featured solution that is designed from the ground up for seamless integration into Visual Studio. By adopting Visual Studio Team System in conjunction with Team Foundation Server, software development teams can easily collaborate on projects regardless of whether they are located within the same department, or dispersed across many geographical locations. Architects, developers, and testers have access to issue tracking, source control, project reporting, and build automation, all tightly integrated inside of Visual Studio, the leading .NET development environment. The Challenge Unfortunately, organizations who would like to deploy Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server across the enterprise are faced with the obstacle of supporting teams on heterogeneous platforms and architectures. For example, while many companies have a high percentage of .NET developers, they often also have a mix of Java developers. In addition, they typically have development teams working on other operating systems, such as Linux, Solaris, or Mac OS X. Companies in this situation would like to standardize on TFS for their entire organization, making the features and robustness of TFS available to everyone in the enterprise. Failure to achieve this level of integration inevitably leads to increased inefficiency, delay, errors, and lost opportunities. The Solution Enter Teamprise. With the goal of delivering the advantages of Team Foundation Server to all development teams in the enterprise, the Teamprise Client
