DownloadWeb 2.0 Principles and Best PracticesIn 2004, we realized that the Web was on the cusp of a new era, one that would finally let loose the power of network effects, setting off a surge of innovation and opportunity. To help usher in this new era, O’Reilly Media and CMP launched a conference that showcased the innovators who were driving it. When O’Reilly’s Dale Dougherty came up with the term “Web 2.0”during a brainstorming session, we knew we had the name for the conference. What we didn’t know was that the industry would embrace the Web 2.0 meme and that it would come to represent the new Web.
Web 2.0 is much more than just pasting a new user interface onto an old application. It’s a way of thinking, a new perspective on the entire business of software—from concept through delivery, from marketing through support. Web 2.0 thrives on network effects: databases that get richer the more people interact with them, applications that are smarter the more people use them, marketing that is driven by user stories and experiences, and applications that interact with each other to form a broader computing platform.
The trend toward networked applications is accelerating. While Web 2.0 has initially taken hold in consumer-facing applications, the infrastructure required to build these applications, and the scale at which they are operating, means that, much as PCs took over from mainframes in a classic demonstration of Clayton Christensen’s “innovator’s dilemma” hypothesis, web applications can and will move into the enterprise space.

Download PDFjEdit 4.2 User's GuideExactly how jEdit is started depends on the operating system. For example, on Unix you can run “jedit” at the command line, or select jEdit from a menu; on Windows, you can double-click on the jEdit icon or select it from the Start menu.
If jEdit is started while another copy is already running, control is transferred to the running copy, and a second instance is not loaded. This saves time and memory if jEdit is started multiple times. Communication between instances of jEdit is implemented using TCP/IP sockets; the initial instance is known as the server, and subsequent invocations are clients.
If you find yourself launching and exiting jEdit a lot, the startup time can get a bit bothersome. If the -background command line switch is specified, jEdit will continue running and waiting for client requests even after all editor windows are closed. When run in background mode, you can open and close jEdit any number of times, only having to wait for it to start the first time. The downside of this is increased memory usage.
When running on MacOS X, the -background command-line switch is active by default, so that jEdit conforms to the platform convention that programs should stay open until the Quit command is explicitly invoked by the user, even if all windows are closed. To disable background mode on MacOS X, use the -nobackground switch.
For more information about command line switches that control the server feature, see the section called “Command Line Usage”.

In the last several releases the functionality has become very robust and a whole lot easier to use due to the Sheet Set Manager and a Wizard. That being said, there is one piece of the Map Books that can cause you to go nuts (and many folks it seems just give up)… setting a % Overlap value and still getting a scaled map book. The key to solving this dilemma is in the Map Book template (.dwt). The following is a discussion of and tutorial on how to properly set up a map book template to produce a properly scaled Map Book set (and stop ramming your head against your desk).
Overlap actually scales your viewport by the value and does NOT compensate for the Scale you set the viewport to be. THIS IS THE KEY #1
That being said, your scale affects the Viewport in your Map Book .dwt file. The Viewport has to be created to match the desired scale of the Map Book compared to the size of your Map Book Grid. To be successful in scale you must create the Grid (in model space) and use the “Custom” Tiling option. Do not use the “By Area” and “By Number” Tiling Options. THIS IS KEY #2.

Download PDFAdvantages of Broadband Phone Services PDFWhy are so many people subscribing to broadband phone services, either as an additional phone line or as a complete replacement to their traditional phone service? The primary reason is cost. But as you will see, other advantages exist as well.
Lowering Your Monthly Phone Bill
What attracted most people to voip or Voice over IP, even when the quality was still questionable, was the fact that you could make free and unlimited long-distance calls. Now that the quality is good, and the calls are still relatively inexpensive, so much the better. How low is low? We examine different service plans available in Chapter 7, “Selecting an Internet Phone Service.” The bottom line is, you can get a broadband phone service with unlimited calling and no nationwide long-distance charges (international calls do cost extra) for $25–30 a month.
How can broadband companies offer phone services more cheaply than the traditional phone companies?
The following four primary factors make broadband phone services so inexpensive:
- Infrastructure costs
- Transport costs
- Regulatory compliance costs
- Taxes and fees
