Switching Office Suites from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice.orgYou've been thinking about it for a while. Web 2.0 enables social networking on the Web by allowing users to contribute content, share it, rate it, create a network of friends, and decide what they like to see and how they want it to look like.
In this panel, we propose to explore what Web 2.0 has to do with databases. Among the questions we will ask are: Are we going to be building new kinds of databases with Web 2.0? What does it mean when 1 million people are building a database as a collaborative effort? What is a new notion of schemas and queries that we need to develop for such scenarios? The main point of controversy is that while some people think that Web 2.0 requires a new data management infrastructure, others view it as a great opportunity to integrate many ”small” distributed databases which store users and content. We finish the panel by asking the question: Are there databases we can build now that could not be built earlier because we have mass collaboration?

Entering Data
Data does not have to start at Cell A1. Data can be placed wherever you like as long as your data is in a solid block of adjacent cells. When you print, you can select a specific set of cells so that empty cells are not printed.
Data Types
There are several different types of data that can be entered into a cell. Some common Data Types are:
- Text
- Numbers
- Dates
- Currency
Each of these can be formatted to suit the requirements of your data. For instance, you can alter the number of decimal places for a Number, or the way a date is written out or abbreviated with a Date. Most Data is entered by typing Data into a cell or group of cells, then defining a Data Type and Format for the cells. If you have a large block of cells with the same Data Type and Format, you can select them all at once and set the Data Type and Format for all of them.
GetWeb Applications With MaypoleThe Maypole web application framework can be used on two levels: first, as a simple way to add an interface to a database (and not much else besides), and second, as a toolkit for building more sophisticated web applications. In principle, there is a continuum of possible usages between these two levels, but it seems best for the purposes of teaching to entirely separate them.
In the first part of this tutorial, we're going to quickly dispatch the first level of operation, putting a front-end onto a database. Not only is this useful in its own right in many cases, it both gives a demonstration of the power and flexibility of Maypole, and provides a useful basis for showing how Maypole applications can be expanded.

1. What is BibleWorks?

2. Orientation to BibleWorks.
BibleWorks has three windows, called the Search, Browse and Analysis Windows. The Search Window is made up of the Command Line and the Results Verse List Box. Combined with the Browse and Analysis Windows, these four main parts allow you to search, display and interact with the texts found in BibleWorks. The screenshot below is labeled with the names that you will find in this document and in the program's Online Help Contents, a manual that is accessible under Help on the main menu. Please take a moment to review and identify each of the labeled areas on your copy of BibleWorks.
