  • Using a MySQL Database
  • In this course, we will learn to use an SQL database system called MySQL. The programming interface we will learn also applies to other database engines, such as Oracle. We are using MySQL because it runs fast and is essentially free, so you can run it on your own machine at home if you desire. 1 Working by Hand There are two main ways to work with a database. First, we will show how to work with it by hand. Second, we will show how to work with it from another program. In the long run, you will do most of your database work using another program that you will write, such as a CGI program. When you are debugging, or when you are doing one-time kinds of things like creating tables, working by hand can be a good solution. 1.1 Connect to the MySQL Server Use this command (e.g., from cs.byuh.edu) to connect to MySQL. mysql -p -h HHH -u UUU Replace HHH with the host name. Replace UUU with your own username. When you are prompted for a password, type it in. Your instructor should tell you your hostname, username, and password. You will change your password later. The -p tells mysql to prompt you for a password. The -h tells mysql to what hostname to connect to. The -u tells mysql what username to use. 1.2 How To Quit Once you have successfully connected to the mysql server, you should see the following prompt: mysql> This means that the mysql server is waiting for you to enter a command. The

  • Teamprise Client Suite
  • The introduction of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) and Team Foundation Server (TFS) changed the practice of Application Lifecycle Management throughout the software development industry. Enterprise organizations now have an affordable, full-featured solution that is designed from the ground up for seamless integration into Visual Studio. By adopting Visual Studio Team System in conjunction with Team Foundation Server, software development teams can easily collaborate on projects regardless of whether they are located within the same department, or dispersed across many geographical locations. Architects, developers, and testers have access to issue tracking, source control, project reporting, and build automation, all tightly integrated inside of Visual Studio, the leading .NET development environment. The Challenge Unfortunately, organizations who would like to deploy Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server across the enterprise are faced with the obstacle of supporting teams on heterogeneous platforms and architectures. For example, while many companies have a high percentage of .NET developers, they often also have a mix of Java developers. In addition, they typically have development teams working on other operating systems, such as Linux, Solaris, or Mac OS X. Companies in this situation would like to standardize on TFS for their entire organization, making the features and robustness of TFS available to everyone in the enterprise. Failure to achieve this level of integration inevitably leads to increased inefficiency, delay, errors, and lost opportunities. The Solution Enter Teamprise. With the goal of delivering the advantages of Team Foundation Server to all development teams in the enterprise, the Teamprise Client

  • Control Abstraction in Parallel Programming Languages
  • Control abstraction is the process by which programmers de ne new control constructs, specifying a statement ordering separately from an implementation of that ordering. We argue that control abstraction can and should play a central role in parallel programming. Control abstraction can be used to build new control constructs for the expression of parallelism. A control construct can have several implementations, representing the varying degrees of parallelism to be exploited on different architectures. Control abstraction also reduces the need for explicit synchronization, since it admits a precise specification of control ow. Using several examples, we illustrate these benefits of control abstraction. We also show that we can efficiently implement a parallel programming language based on control abstraction. We conclude that the enormous benefits and reasonable costs of control abstraction argue for its inclusion in explicitly parallel programming languages. Sequential programming languages use sequencing, repetition, and selection to define a total ordering of statement executions in a program. Parallel programming languages use additional control ow constructs, such as fork, cobegin, or parallel for loops, to introduce a partial order on statement executions, which admits a parallel implementation. Since parallelism is primarily an issue of control ow, the control constructs provided by the language can either help or hinder attempts to express and exploit parallelism. • PaintFx - Plasma Membrane Animation Techniques
  • This tutorial will take you through the process of creating an animated plasma membrane using Maya's unique Paint Effects module. Much of the tutorial will be focused on how to create a custom brush starting with the Paint Effects base brushes that ship with Maya. Paint Effects are ideal for situations in which a very large number of objects need to be seen from a distance (in this particular situation, the number of lipids on the surface of the membrane). Lets start by designing the brush. Creating a Base Stroke Designing a custom Paint Effects brush requires the adjustment of a myriad sliders and attributes. The process is not terribly straight-forward. The best way to learn is get an idea of how the paint effects controls work and then experiment. As you gain experience you'll find yourself becoming more comfortable with creating brushes. However, no matter how much experience you have, working with Paint Effects will almost always come down to trial and error with all of the various settings. This section of the tutorial is a walk-through of a typical custom brush design exercise. I will explain the controls that I use and what I hope to achieve when adjusting their settings. There are many ways to create a particular effect using a brush, the methods I describe are just a few. 1. Create a new Maya scene, this scene will be the devoted to designing the brush, once you have something satisfactory, you can export the brush from here to any
