  • Professional Programmer's Guide to Fortran77
  • Fortran is the most widely used programming language in the world for numerical applications. It has achieved this position partly by being on the scene earlier than any of the other major languages and partly because it seems gradually to have evolved the features which its users, especially scientists and engineers, found most useful. In order to retain compatibility with old programs, Fortran has advanced mainly by adding new features rather than by removing old ones. The net result is, of course, that some parts of the language are, by present standards, rather archaic: some of these can be avoided easily, others can still be a nuisance. This section gives a brief history of the language, outlines its future prospects, and summarises its strengths and weaknesses. Fortran was invented by a team of programmers working for IBM in the early nineteen-fifties. This group, led by John Backus, produced the first compiler, for an IBM 704 computer, in 1957. They used the name Fortran because one of their principal aims was “formula translation”. But Fortran was in fact one of the very first high-level language: it came complete with control structures and facilities for input/output. Fortran became popular quite rapidly and compilers were soon produced for other IBM machines. Before long other manufacturers were forced to design Fortran compilers for their own hardware. By 1963 all the major manufacturers had joined in and there were dozens of different Fortran compilers in existence, many of them rather more powerful than the original. All this resulted

  • Web 2.0 – More than Social Networking
  • Web 2.0 was meant to revolutionise the way people interact both at home and at work. Yet to date the technology appears to be firmly ensconced in the consumer marketplace where individuals are now highly familiar with the ease of collaboration via Facebook and the value of wikis and blogs. Just how receptive is the corporate market to this new way of working? For the last 10 years technology has done little more than replicate the working practices of the past 30 years, simply adding speed and convenience. But users now want and need to see this consumer Web 2.0 style technology deployed in the corporate workspace to improve productivity, collaboration and information sharing. But are businesses buying in to the concept of the new office environment based upon less hierarchies, team oriented working and cross functional contribution? Are they attracted by opportunities for interacting online with customers and suppliers? Do they understand the potential cost savings associated with web based technology delivery that drives out the need for desktop based applications, hence reducing support and maintenance costs? Or is the continued media focus on Web 2.0’s role as a consumer facing tool undermining its corporate credibility? Web 2.0 – More than Social Networking is a research study that looks at current levels of Web 2.0 adoption and understanding across the UK. On behalf of Parity, Bournemouth University asked businesses whether or not they had invested in Web 2.0, and the business reasons behind the decision making. The results reveal endemic misunderstanding and
  • Teamprise Client Suite
  • The introduction of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) and Team Foundation Server (TFS) changed the practice of Application Lifecycle Management throughout the software development industry. Enterprise organizations now have an affordable, full-featured solution that is designed from the ground up for seamless integration into Visual Studio. By adopting Visual Studio Team System in conjunction with Team Foundation Server, software development teams can easily collaborate on projects regardless of whether they are located within the same department, or dispersed across many geographical locations. Architects, developers, and testers have access to issue tracking, source control, project reporting, and build automation, all tightly integrated inside of Visual Studio, the leading .NET development environment. The Challenge Unfortunately, organizations who would like to deploy Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server across the enterprise are faced with the obstacle of supporting teams on heterogeneous platforms and architectures. For example, while many companies have a high percentage of .NET developers, they often also have a mix of Java developers. In addition, they typically have development teams working on other operating systems, such as Linux, Solaris, or Mac OS X. Companies in this situation would like to standardize on TFS for their entire organization, making the features and robustness of TFS available to everyone in the enterprise. Failure to achieve this level of integration inevitably leads to increased inefficiency, delay, errors, and lost opportunities. The Solution Enter Teamprise. With the goal of delivering the advantages of Team Foundation Server to all development teams in the enterprise, the Teamprise Client
  • Buffer Overflow Exploits: The Why and How
  • McAfee System Protection Solutions Table of Contents Unchecked buffers Exploiting the overflow Now, for the clever part Other types of buffer overflow exploits Preventing buffer overflow exploits Summary Buffer overflow exploits are the tool of choice of today’s attacker. These exploits have the most power, are the easiest to use, and are all too common. Buffer overflows constitute the largest single threat to enterprises today. • Buffer overflow exploits are very common. There are hundreds of known unchecked buffers that can be overflowed by hackers with more being discovered all the time. Over 60% of CERT advisories deal with buffer overflow exploits. • Buffer overflow exploits are easy to use. Nearly anyone (12 year olds and script kiddies included) can download buffer overflow attack code and follow a simple “recipe” to execute it. No advanced technical knowledge is necessary to run pre-written buffer overflow exploit code. • Buffer overflow exploits are very powerful. In many cases, the malicious code that executes as a result of a buffer overflow will run with administrator-level privileges, and therefore can do anything it wants to the server. • Mapping the Net: Revenge of the Physical World
  • Once upon a time, the Internet was a wholly virtual environment, moored only loosely to the physical world. It was where information went to become free, where censorship was routed around, where communities could leap barriers of distance and culture in a single bound . . . and where no one knew you were a dog. The kicker was that these aspects were built into the fabric of the Net, thanks to its origins in military communications research. You couldn’t tie the Net to the real world if you wanted to. The physical world is making a comeback, even online. With the collapse of the dot-com stock bubble, things like brick-and-mortar storefronts, tangible assets, face-to-face meetings and hard-dollar profits suddenly are fashionable again. Following the same pattern, the foundational assumption that Internet users and sites have no connection to geography is eroding. It’s now possible to determine with high levels of certainty where someone is connecting from. This allows for targeting of services and content, but also raises the possibility that physical-world laws will encroach on cyberspace. Like it or not, the era when one could confidently speak of the Net as a world apart is coming to a close. Profitability and traditional stock valuation metrics do matter in the end. Napster and MP3.com have been forced to restructure their offerings in response to pressure from the music industry. (Just before we went to press MP3.com was bought by a major record company, Vivendi Universal.) Most, though not all, of the largest
