Understanding Microsoft's Web TechnologiesIn the beginning, the World Wide Web (WWW) was flat. It was an electronic library where academics and scientists posted dissertations and dusty data for reading with clunky, text-only browsers. With the advent of graphical browsers, the consumer oriented Web took off. Content became vastly more colorful. Remember where you were the first time you experienced the exciting blink and marquee tags? (I bet you wish you could forget those gems!) Anyway, the Web has evolved as a rich, interactive, and personalized medium. In the new version of Web (Web 2.0), functional pages aren’t enough. User experience (abbreviated as UX in geekspeak) is hot, and sites are cool. This chapter looks at Microsoft’s tools and technologies for creating and delivering engaging Web content.
Microsoft has a range of tools for authoring Web pages that appeal to several
skill levels. Some tools are more suited to Web page design, while others are
more appropriate to programming.
Microsoft Office (Including Word 2007)
When Bill Gates realized that Microsoft was lagging on the Internet front, the word went out to integrate Web support into every product. As a result, you can save Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and PowerPoint slides as Web pages.
Many companies use the Office suite to place information on their intranet because most employees are comfortable in Word and Excel. These tools are quite adequate for creating static Web content that some call brochure ware. Although somewhat bloated, the pages are faithful reproductions of the original document — especially when viewed in Microsoft’s latest Internet ExplorerCrawling Ajax-driven Web 2.0 ApplicationsCrawling web applications is one of the key phases of automated web application scanning. The objective of crawling is to collect all possible resources from the server in order to automate vulnerability detection on each of these resources. A resource that is overlooked during this discovery phase can mean a failure to detect some vulnerabilities. The introduction of Ajax throws up new challenges [1] for the crawling engine. New ways of handling the crawling process are required as a result of these challenges. The objective of this paper is to use a practical approach to address this issue using rbNarcissus, Watir and Ruby.
Usually crawling engines are “protocol-driven” and open a socket connection on the target host or IP address and port. Once a connection is in place the crawler sends HTTP requests and tries to interpret responses. All these responses are parsed and resources are collected for future access. The resource parsing process is crucial and the crawler tries to collect possible sets of resources by fetching links, scripts, flash components and other significant data.
The “protocol-driven” approach does not work when the crawler comes across an Ajax embedded page. This is because all target resources are part of JavaScript code and are embedded in the DOM context. It is important to both understand and trigger this DOM-based activity. In the process, this has lead to another approach called “event-driven” crawling. It has following three key components
1. Javascript analysis and interpretation with linking to Ajax
2. DOM event handling and dispatching

This is particularly relevant for outsourced data frameworks in which clients place data management with specialized service providers. Clients are reluctant to place sensitive data under the control of a foreign party without assurances of confidentiality. Additionally, once outsourced, privacy and data access correctness (data integrity and query completeness) become paramount. Today’s solutions are fundamentally insecure and vulnerable to illicit behavior, because they do not handle these dimensions.
In this tutorial we will explore how to design and build robust, efficient, and scalable data outsourcing mechanisms providing strong security assurances of (1) correctness, (2) confidentiality, and (3) data access privacy.
There exists a strong relationship between such assurances; for example, the lack of access pattern privacy usually allows for statistical attacks compromising data confidentiality. Confidentiality can be achieved by data encryption. However, to be practical, outsourced data services should allow expressive client queries (e.g., relational joins with arbitrary predicates) without compromising confidentiality. This is a hard problem because decryption keys cannot be directly provided to potentially untrusted servers. Moreover, if the remote server cannot be fully trusted, protocol correctness become essential. Therefore, solutions that do not address all three dimensions are incomplete and insecure.
