  • An Introduction to Database Normalization
  • When users ask for advice about their database applications, one of the first things I try to help them with is the normalization of their table structure. Normalization is the process of removing redundant data from your tables in order to improve storage efficiency, data integrity and scalability. This improvement is balanced against an increase in complexity and potential performance losses from the joining of the normalized tables at query-time. First, this table is not very efficient with storage. Lets imagine for a second that Luke and Laura were extremely busy writers and managed to produce 500 books for our database. The combination of their two names is 25 characters long, and since we will repeat their two names in 500 rows we are wasting 25 × 500 = 12,500 bytes of storage space unnecessarily. Second, this design does not protect data integrity. Lets once again imagine that Luke and Laura have written 500 books. Someone has had to type their names into the database 500 times, and it is very likely that one of their names will be misspelled at least once (i.e.. Thompson instead of Thomson). Our data is now corrupt, and anyone searching for book by author name will find some of the results missing. The same thing could happen with publisher name. Sams publishes hundreds of titles and if the publisher's name were misspelled even once the list of books by publisher would be missing titles. Third, this table does not scale well. First of all, we have limited
  • Tire Balance, Vehicle Ride & Vibration PDF
  • As a result of advancements in automotive technology, today’s tire and wheel/rim fitments require special attention. By design, radial tire construction and low aspect ratios contribute to a vehicle’s ride and handling quality. Proper tire mounting, balancing and installation are critical to attaining a smooth vehicle ride. Vehicle vibration and a suspected problem tire may actually be due to an improperly balanced tire and wheel assembly or related to the mechanical condition of the vehicle. BALANCING The technical definition of balance is the uniform distribution of mass about an axis of rotation, where the center of gravity is in the same location as the center of rotation. A balanced tire is one where mass of the tire – when mounted on its wheel and the car’s axle – is uniformly distributed around the axle (its center of rotation). Balanced tires can spell the difference between a positive and negative driving experience. Drivers of new, high performance or luxury vehicles may be more sensitive to imbalance problems, but no driver is happy with an annoying vibration. An out-of-balance tire and wheel assembly: • Degrades ride quality and driver comfort. • Shortens the life of tires, bearings, shock absorber, and other suspension components. Vibration is the most noticeable effect of imbalance. • It is dependent on vehicle speed and may be felt in the steering wheel, seats or floor board. • It often first becomes apparent between 40 and 45 mph and changes in magnitude with greater speeds. Because of this, Yokohama customers with ride complaints,

  • Programming in Ruby Tutorial
  • In Ruby, super is not a reference to a parent class; instread it is an executable statemtn that reinvokes the current method, skipping any definition in the class of the current object. Attributes, Instance Variables, and Bertrand Meyer The initialize method in class Song contains the line @title = title Names that start with single “at” signs @ are instance variables - variables that are specific to a particular instance or object of a class. In our case, each Song object has its own title, so it makes sense to have that title be an instance variable. Download Programming in Ruby
  • JBoss Eclipse IDE Tutorial
  • An introduction and walkthrough of JBoss Eclipse IDE 2.1. Introduction The goal of this tutorial is to demonstrate how simple it is to develop J2EE applications with JBoss Eclipse IDE. The sample application that will be built is a J2EE application with one session EJB and one Servlet, which computes the Fibonacci suite. The tutorial is split into several parts: • The Project: this part shows how the project is prepared (source and build path) • The EJB: this part shows how to write an EJB class with its XDoclet javadoc tags. • Generation of EJB files: this part shows how to configure the XDoclet generation configuration to generate all the EJB related files • The Servlet and the Web-App: this part shows how to write a Servlet class with its XDoclet javadoc tags. • Generation of Servlet files: this part shows how to configure the XDoclet generation configuration to generate all the Web related files... • FlowPATH Tool-pathing Tutorial
  • This tutorial outlines the process of preparing a 2D digital file for tool-pathing with FlowPATH for use with the school’s abrasive water-jet cutter. The water-jet is only capable of 2D cutting operations, and has extremely limited control of the depth of the cut so work should be designed with 2D lines and with the intention that the lines will be cut completely through the material – not etched. Depending on the hardness of the material it is possible to etch or score a cut instead of cutting all the way through, but this should only be done with ductile materials as it will cause shattering or breaking in more brittle materials. 2D File Creation 1) The FlowPATH software will only accept 2D geometry, and it works best with lines and arcs, splines may cause some problems. The lines can be made in any 2D application capable of exporting DXF files; possible applications are Maya, 3dMax, Rhino, AutoCAD, Illustrator and VectorWorks. If your model is made of surfaces or polygons it is necessary to duplicate the edges of the objects to make 2D lines, you cannot use the surface geometry directly for water-jet cutting. Objects and parts should be made at full-scale, the limits of the bed size are 40” x 20”. Pieces should also be on the XY plane with the Z axis up. 2) Once you have suitable geometry created in a 3D application you must export it as DXF. When exporting you should save as Release 12 (R12) format, this format
