  • Clay Render with Wires
  • In this tutorial, you will learn how to render out any object with a clay material, and how to add wireframe. For this tutorial you will need a novice to intermediate knowledge about 3DS Max, or your preferred 3d application. In this tutorial, I will be using 3DS Max 9, so if you have an older version or if you are using a different 3d application, your button configuration maybe slightly different. To begin, open 3D Max or your preferred 3D application. Insert your model or any object that you wish to give this effect to. For this tutorial, I will use a simple primitive, a sphere. Once you have the object that you wish to apply the effect to in the scene, open your Material Editor by pushing the keyboard shortcut or "Hotkey" M, or click on the four spheres in the main toolbar. Once you have the Material Editor open, select the Diffuse color, and then change it to a light brown color. Double click the color in the Diffuse slot. The Color Selector : Diffuse Color Menu with pop up. Now, choose a nice light brown color. I used R: 220; G: 205; B: 165. Download pdf Clay Render with Wires
  • Virtools Tutorial: How to Create Interactive Textures and an Orbital Camera
  • This tutorial shows how to create behaviors for interactive textures: scrolling, blending textures on the faces of a cube. We will work on one face of the cube with its specific material-shader and one texture “mountain.jpg”. Part 4 of this tutorial covers setting up an orbital camera. Part 1- In Maya, exporting a cube with textures Before exporting to Virtools, make sure that all faces inside the cube have their normals facing towards the inside of the cube. Go to Modeling, Display > Polygon Components > Normals Normals are represented with colored lines sticking out of the faces of the cube. The red arrow shows the way one normal should look like. • The Ten Minute Guide to Setting Up a Linux Web Server
  • A Web server has different partition requirements than a desktop or a file server. For a machine with 26 GB of hard disk space, spread out over two drives, here's one possible configuration. Boot is always 100 MB, unless you're so pressed for disk space that you need to reduce it further. /var/www is where Web server files go, so you'll want a lot of room there. Swap is usually twice the amount of RAM. hda (12 GB) - boot 100 MB - /var/www 11,000 MB - swap 500 (assuming 256 MB of RAM) Reserve a fair amount of space for /tmp and /var, which hold files like logs and working files. Putting each of these in its own partition means that, for example, a log file that runs out of control won't crash the rest of the system. Reserve a fair amount of space for /home. And increase that if you're going to have other people maintaining their own home directories on your Web server. The rest goes to the root partition. hdb (14 GB) - / 5000 - /tmp 2000 - /home 3000 - /var 2000 If you're not using DHCP, you're going to need to configure your network card manually. In the Network Configuration step, select the Edit button to the right of the Network Devices list box. You'll uncheck the “Configure using HDCP” check box, and then enter the IP Address and Netmask for your Web server computer. Once back in the Network Configuration step, you'll select the “Set the hostname” option button to “manually”, and enter
  • A Quick Microsoft Access 2000/2002 Tutorial
  • This tutorial is intended for computer science students who need a quick introduction to Microsoft Access, but it will be useful to anyone needing such an introduction. To get the full benefit of this tutorial, you will need a computer running one of Microsoft Windows 95 or higher, Microsoft NT 4.0 or higher, or Microsoft Windows 2000. You will also need to have a copy of Microsoft Access 2000/2002 installed. Introduction Though Microsoft Access is NOT synonymous with database systems, there are more copies of Microsoft Access in use than any other database system. It therefore behooves computer science students to be at least superficially familiar with MS Access. This tutorial will guide you through some of the basic point-and-click stuff, and will even show you how to issue complex SQL (Structured Query Language) queries. You will open the Northwind Microsoft sample database and query it in various ways. This is a HANDS ON tutorial; it gives you step-by-step directions for carrying out simple tasks in Access. As you read, you should have a copy of the Northwind database open in Microsoft Access 2000/2002, and you should carry out the tasks yourself, exactly as directed. • Focusing the Autofocus: The a Autofocus group in the first level of the Custom Settings menu contains a variety of advanced autofocus options. This chapter details options that can be used to frame moving subjects at sporting events: a1 (AF-Cpriority selection), a3 (Dynamic AF area), and a4 (Focus tracking with lock-on). These options are best used with the focus mode selector rotated to C (continuous-servo AF) and the AF-area mode selector rotated to I (dynamic-area AF). 1. Select continuous-servo AF. Rotate the focus-mode selector to C. The camera will continually adjust focus while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. 2. Select dynamic-area AF. Rotate the AF-area mode selector to I (dynamic-area AF). If the subject briefly leaves the selected focus point, the camera will focus based on information from surrounding focus points 3. Choose an option for Custom Setting a1. Choose whether the camera gives priority to focus or to shutter response in focus mode C. 4. Choose an option for Custom Setting a3. Choose the number of focus points used for dynamic-area AF. Select 9 points or 21 points for track-and-field events or for subjects that move unpredictably. • From Programming Language Design to Computer Construction
  • Niklaus Wirth of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology {ETH] waspresented the 1984 ACM A. M. Ihring Award at the Association's Annual Conference in San Francisco in October in recognition of his outstanding work in developing a sequence of innovative computer languages: Euler' ALGOL-W, Modula, and Pascal. Pascal, in particular, has become significant pedagogically and has established a foundation for future research in the areas of computer language, systems, and architecture. The hallmarks of a Wirth language are its simplicity, economy of design, and high-quality engineering, which result in a language whose notation appears to be a natural extension of algorithmic thinking rather than an extraneous formalism. Wirth's ability in language design is complemented by a masterful writing ability. In the April 1971 issue of Communications of the ACM, Wirth published a seminal paper on Structured Programming {"Program Develop- ment by Stepwise Refinement"] that recommended top-down structuring of programs {i.e., successively refining program stubs until the program is fully elaborated]. The resulting elegant and powerful method of exposition remains interesting reading today even after the furor over Structured Programming has subsided. 1lvo later papers, "Toward a Discipline of Real-Time Programming" and "What Can We Do About the Unnecessary Diversity of Notation" {published in CACM in August and November 1974, respectively], speak to Wirth's consistent and dedicated search for an adequate language formalism. The Taring Award, the Association's highest recognition of technical contributions to the computing community, honors Alan M. Taring, the English mathematician who defined the computer prototype Taring machine and helped
