  • An Introduction to Database Normalization
  • When users ask for advice about their database applications, one of the first things I try to help them with is the normalization of their table structure. Normalization is the process of removing redundant data from your tables in order to improve storage efficiency, data integrity and scalability. This improvement is balanced against an increase in complexity and potential performance losses from the joining of the normalized tables at query-time. First, this table is not very efficient with storage. Lets imagine for a second that Luke and Laura were extremely busy writers and managed to produce 500 books for our database. The combination of their two names is 25 characters long, and since we will repeat their two names in 500 rows we are wasting 25 × 500 = 12,500 bytes of storage space unnecessarily. Second, this design does not protect data integrity. Lets once again imagine that Luke and Laura have written 500 books. Someone has had to type their names into the database 500 times, and it is very likely that one of their names will be misspelled at least once (i.e.. Thompson instead of Thomson). Our data is now corrupt, and anyone searching for book by author name will find some of the results missing. The same thing could happen with publisher name. Sams publishes hundreds of titles and if the publisher's name were misspelled even once the list of books by publisher would be missing titles. Third, this table does not scale well. First of all, we have limited

  • MAYA Height Field Mapping Transforming 2D image data into 3D NURBS surface
  • In this tutorial, we will be working with NURBS geometry. NURBS surfaces are always XY grids, but these grids can be shaped in different primitive forms. For our purposes, we will create a simple plane. After creating the plane, open the channel editor. Within the channel editor, we can click ‘makeNurbsPlane1’ node to unfold a series of options for that NURBS surface. This is one example of ‘history’ within maya - we can go back and change any attribute that defined the object. In this case, we will increase the surface detail by increasing the values of ‘Patches U’ and ‘Patches V’ (from 1 to 5) In this tutorial, we will be working with NURBS geometry. NURBS surfaces are always XY grids, but these grids can be shaped in different primitive forms. For our purposes, we will create a simple plane. After creating the plane, open the channel editor. To apply an image data to transform the NURBS surface, we will be using the following command. • NICMOS optical aberrations coma and astigmatism
  • Coma and astigmatism of NICMOS cameras have been derived using phase retrieval … Coma and astigmatism in NICMOS cameras are generally small, producing the Coma and astigmatism of NICMOS cameras have been derived using phase retrieval analysis of the data from the NICMOS focus monitoring program. Analysis of these aberrations has revealed that y-coma in all three camera experienced a systematic change over the NICMOS lifetime in Cycles 7 and 7a. A similar variation has been found for x-astigmatism in camera 2. In camera 3, the x-astigmatism increased dramatically after the FOM had been given a y-tilt of 16 arcsec. X-coma and y-astigmatism in all cameras did not show substantial systematic variations over the same period of time. The results of this study should help to understand the origin of the NICMOS optics instability. They should also facilitate interpretation of possible changes in NICMOS cameras when they are back to operations after installation of the cryocooler in Cycle 10. 1. Introduction NICMOS optical characteristics experienced noticeable variations since the start of the instrument orbital life in early 1997. • Disaster Recovery Procedures for Microsoft SQL 2000 and 2005 using N series
  • This IBM® Redpaper gives a example of procedures to restore the Microsoft® SQL 2000 and 2005 using SnapManager®.There are options discussed that depend on the type of disaster, the type of data recovery, and the type of system on which the disaster applies. Recovering a snapshot with SnapManager for SQL The process to restore a SQL database requires DBA skills and knowledge of the SnapManager product. In the SnapManager Administration guide several restore options are described, followed by a step-by-step instruction. This paper does not describe those steps. Restoring a snapshot with SnapManager In this section we discuss the steps taken in a test scenario as executed during a disaster recovery test. Log on to the SQL server (in this case SQL2000 PDC1DB005) with SA_snapdrive and start Enterprise Manager for SQL. 1. Select properties of the database that you want to restore. 2. Set the database in single user mode. 3. Close Enterprise Manager. 4. Stop the (remote) services that connect to the database. Use the process information of SQL Enterprise Manager to find active processes. 5. Start SnapManager for SQL. Depending on what database you must restore (and the sort of backups taken for that database), the procedure may differ. • Open source tools for content management
  • Information and documentation services available on the Internet through web servers are growing in an exponential manner. The logical evolution of the Internet over the last 10 years has been producing a replacement of static web pages and documents by dynamically generated documents. This is due both to user interaction with work processes and flows defined by service creators and to the availability of growing information repositories. This has meant a progressive evolution from a concept of web page publishing which was quite simple in its origins to more complex and differentiated schemes relying on procedures and techniques based on information management. The increasing complexity of services and systems supporting them has made it necessary to formulate a theoretical and practical corpus capable of combining classical information management techniques within organizations with the particular features of the digital environment. This evolution which has been accelerating during the first years of the 20th Century has had an impact not only information management methods and techniques but also on the very technology used for information management; and consequently the market for products and services (GILBANE, 2000). If it is true that during the second half of the 1990's we could distinguish between products for document management, information retrieval, etc., since the turn of the century there has been a convergence between all platforms. Nowadays it has become easy to find solutions that intend to be global and to provide support for the whole process of information management within an organization. The kind of
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D (2009) Highway Geometric Design Tutorial
  • Welcome to AutoCAD Civil 3D! For this and subsequent homework, a short tutorial will introduce you to the critical functions one may use in Civil 3D to do highway design. This is by no means an exhaustive discussion of the subject, but should be enough to get you started. Additional questions can be directed to the instructor (although he is by no means an expert). You should run AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009. If prompted, indicate that you will use Civil 3D Complete, as this will provide you with access to all the Civil 3D functions we will need. Once you have started, you will then see something like the following screen. We will eventually get through quite a few of the menus and functions. For this homework, we will use Surfaces, Alignments, and Profiles. This sequence of menu options actually fits the sequence in the homework nicely, so we will proceed through them one by one. I find that it is useful for me to open up the “Toolspace”. The Toolspace is a visual repository of the major geometric features that we will be using, and it allows you to manipulate these features directly, rather than (or in addition to) going through the usual top-level menu structure. The Toolspace can be added to the screen by going to General -> Toolspace. The Toolspace is shown below. Download pdf AutoCAD Civil 3D (2009) Highway Geometric Design Tutorial
