  • A Quick, Painless Tutorial on the Python Language
  • What Are Scripting Languages? Languages like C and C++ allow a programmer to write code at a very detailed level which has good execution speed (especially in the case of C). But in most applications, execution speed is not important, and in many cases one would prefer to write at a higher level. For example, for text-manipulation applications, the basic unit in C/C++ is a character, while for languages like Perl and Python the basic units are lines of text and words within lines. One can work with lines and words in C/C++, but one must go to greater effort to accomplish the same thing. The term scripting language has never been formally defined, but here are the typical characteristics: • Used often for system administration, Web programming, text processing, etc. • Very casual with regard to typing of variables, e.g. little or no distinction between integer, floating-point or string variables. Arrays can mix elements of different “types,” such as integers and strings. Functions can return nonscalars, e.g. arrays. Nonscalars can be used as loop indexes. Etc. • Lots of high-level operations intrinsic to the language, e.g. string concatenation and stack push/pop. • Interpreted, rather than being compiled to the instruction set of the host machine Why Python? The first really popular scripting language was Perl. It is still in wide usage today, but the languages with momentum are Python and the Python-like Ruby. Many people, including me, greatly prefer Python to Perl, as it is much cleaner and more elegant. Python is very popular among the developers

  • Integrating Components with Visual Studio .NET
  • Visual Studio .NET presents a great deal of information about controls and other components you use in the development environment. When you drag a compo- nent from the toolbox into your project, VS.NET appears to know everything about it—the events and properties it supports are displayed in the property panel, neatly categorized, with a short description available for each member. Some controls have their own unique interactive editing features. Many add extra items to Visual Studio .NET’s menus. You might suspect that this level of extensive and often highly specialized support is something that is available only for the built-in controls, but that is not the case. Visual Studio .NET has a very open architecture for allowing components to customize the way in which they integrate with the environment. Basic Integration To build components that exploit Visual Studio .NET’s integration facilities, you must understand the basic mechanisms involved. Component integration relies heavily on the .NET runtime’s reflection mechanism—the facility that allows type information to be examined at runtime. VS.NET uses reflection to discover what properties and events your component provides. Strictly speaking, Visual Studio .NET doesn’t use reflection directly. It uses the TypeDescriptor class and its friends in the System. ComponentModel namespace. These provide a virtualized view of type information, which allows a component’s properties to be extended dynamically. The TypeDescriptor API is implemented using the reflection API however.. • Andy Melton's XAMPP Server Installation Tutorial
  • What is XAMPP? I decided that the quickest way to get you up and running with your own web server would be to use Apache Friend's XAMPP. XAMPP is an application that combines Apache (the web server), MySQL (database), PHP (scripting language) and phpMyAdmin (database administration) all into one. Normally, to set up a web server you'd have to install each of those individually. With XAMPP, you install one application and you have a fully functional server. Now, you're probably thinking, “Well, if it's that easy then why is this blog entry HUGE!?” Well. The reason this is a large entry is I am going to walk you through all the steps of setting up XAMPP AND make sure that you set it up so that it is secure! The default XAMPP installation is meant for developers on a local network, not for a real world installation, however, there are ways of making the installation secure and ready for real world use. Also, there are a few other things we'll need to do other than installing XAMPP to get things going. Installing on Fedora Core 5 There are many distributions of Linux out there, my distribution of choice is Fedora Core. I prefer it because I've always had the most luck with it and have friends who use it. The steps contained within this article could be easily applied to Ubuntu or another distribution. You may also be asking me why I am going to install this using an outdated version of Fedora. The main reason
  • Is The Web Becoming More Accessible For People With Visual Impairments?
  • During the past five years, many dramatic changes have occurred on the Web. New services have been announced, new interfaces have been developed and the Web is approaching to be the new platform for many applications. Wikis, RSS feeds, Blogs to name just a few, are dubs of new Web applications (also know as Web 2.0) that sighted people are experimenting and enjoying nowadays. However, the question we want to address is: How these new applications and changes are going to affect on how visually impaired people access them? This paper aims to provide information about the tools, services, projects, and research that are taking place nowadays on the Web and the Semantic Web to make the Web more accessible for visually impaired people. Also, the authors will present a pilot experiment to check the accessibility of some Web 2.0 services. The World Wide Web (WWW) is the largest information database humans have ever invented. People can find different kinds of information (e.g. news, research papers, quotes, etc.) that they can acquire and manipulate. But, as the WWW evolves and gets more advanced, new services and applications become more complicated. Therefore, the question that arises is: can people with visual impairments access information as easy as their sighted counterparts? Accessibility, by definition, is the ability to access information on the web by everyone. Visually Impaired People (VIP) include those who are blind or have a low vision. They should have an equal opportunity to access the different resources on the Web
