This chapter provides a (necessarily) brief introduction to computer networking concepts. For many applications of gawk to TCP/IP networking, we hope that this is enough. For more advanced tasks, you will need deeper background, and it may be necessary to switch to lower-level programming in C or C++.

There are two real-life models for the way computers send messages to each other over a network. While the analogies are not perfect, they are close enough to convey the major concepts. These two models are the phone system (reliable byte-stream communications), and the postal system (best-effort datagrams).

The directions below will produce the RedHat (currently version 6.2 is used, 7.0 is in development) Linux system that boots into the bare (=no window manager, like gnome, kde or fvwm2) X server and starts Netscape Navigator (not Communicator, which includes Main and News clients). Upon exiting the browser the X server is restarted and the new Netscape process is launched as needed. The system is intended for Internet Kiosks and similar applications. Security is emphasized at all the stages of the setup. This HOWTO will be updated (maybe significantly) as long as more reports about the deployment of such boxes will arrive.

If you wish to do your assignments on a PC, you will need either Windows 2000, XP, or
Vista and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. Note that Windows 98 or Me are not able to run Visual Studio 2005. You should be familiar with the Windows operating system and PCs in general, and be willing and able to figure out the Visual Studio 2005 environment.

The emphasis in class will be on general programming concepts, not on the workings of Visual Studio (often referred to as just VS), and the code you write will be virtually identical to code written by students using a Macintosh.

To install the Maxtor OneTouch II software and Dantz Retrospect Express: 1. Insert the Install CD. 2. Open the Install CD and open the folder for your language. 3. Open the folder named OS X and Double-click the Install Retrospect Express icon. Select the Easy Install option and follow the on-screen directions to complete the software installation. This information is not copyrighted (especially since I have borowed logos and trademarked names) so feel free to share it. Version 1.2 January 30, 2002 I was very frustrated! After creating six “coasters”, I thought there was no way to burn a bootable Mac CD using Toast.
