Download Peugeot PDF ManualHow to Identify Successful Actors of the Flickr Community and How to Determine Their AttributesUnder the term “Web 2.0” the Internet is currently going through a new growth phase where end users create content and communities are built for user interaction. One of these Web 2.0 services is Flickr, a photo-sharing platform that allows users to upload photos, tag, comment and add them to favourite lists and build a personal social network.
Using the relationships between users, pictures, tags and groups, analysis of Flickr’s social structure gives a hint about the way people interact on a digital platform. Our project is part of a larger research project that aims to predict the success of social structures inside communities. Therefore we introduce a new approach to measure the performance of social entities inside the community and work out managerial implications. Although Flickr has become one of the most active Web 2.0 platforms, little research has been done so far. Mislove et al. [Mi07] state that online social networks including Flickr are so different from real world ones that the same measurements cannot be used. Kumaret al. [KNT06] from Yahoo Research have investigated the evolution of Flickr and Yahoo!360 by using an empirical model to prove their classification of three user groups.
The process of pictures becoming popular through social network relationships is explored by Lerman & Jones [LJ06]. Advertising on social networking websites has also been a point of interest in Clemons, Barnett & Appadurai [CBA07] who suggest a change of marketing and advertisement efforts caused by new requirements.

Download PDFVerifying Web Services Security ConfigurationsXML Web Services provide a flexible API for building distributed systems as a collection of endpoints that can send and receive SOAP messages. These systems are secured using message-based cryptographic mechanisms defined in a series of specifications developed by Microsoft, IBM, and others. Such home-grown security protocols often go wrong; they are prone to a well-known class of attacks, formalized by Dolev and Yao, where an attacker can intercept, modify, and replay messages. The vulnerability is only increased by the flexible message formats and complex trust configurations allowed by the standards. Our goal is to verify the security of families of protocol configurations, such as those deployed for Microsoft’s WSE and Indigo web services implementations.
We propose a new specification language for writing machine-checkable descriptions of SOAP-based security protocol configurations and their properties. Our TulaFale language is based on the pi calculus (for writing collections of SOAP processors running in parallel), plus XML syntax (to express SOAP messaging), logical predicates (to construct and filter SOAP messages), and correspondence assertions (to specify authentication goals of protocols). Our implementation compiles TulaFale into the applied pi calculus, and then runs Blanchet’s resolution-based protocol verifier. The TulaFale implementation is available for download.
We also describe a high-level link language for describing security configurations, and demonstrate a tool that can automatically generate and analyze executable security policy deployments for web services written using WSE. This is the first tool we know of that can automatically analyze cryptographic configurations to find real errors and demonstrable attacks.

DownloadHistory of Web 2.0: OverviewTim Berners-Lee’s vision of the World Wide Web was for a tool which created and gathered knowledge through human interaction and collaboration. Web 2.0 is a stage of development in which the Web is progressing towards this goal. Most analysts define Web 2.0 in terms of the tools that foster online participation in content creation and social interaction. This tends only to produce lists of new software applications or claims of ‘we are the web’, ‘web 2.0 is people’ etc etc. What I’ve attempted to tease out – following examples from Tim O’Reilly and Danah Boyd – is what lies beneath these tools: what makes them so important or useful? Why are they soaring in popularity?
The conclusion I’ve come to is that their significance lies in their ability to allow the average user to organize online information in such a way that is useful, meaningful and personally relevant. They help people navigate the virtual world and find what they are looking for. They do this by leveraging key characteristics of the Web for a variety of different forms of communication. They can tackle the Web’s inherent problem (unfathomable amounts of information) by capitalizing of its inherent possibilities (collective intelligence, wide variety of types of knowledge, social networks – all the potential benefits of millions of people sharing a virtual space).
How does it help you find information online?
How does it use collective intelligence?
How does it connect you with others?
How does it let you find very specialized information?

Search only works if youWYSIWYG Development of Data Driven Web ApplicationsAn emerging trend in Social Networking sites and Web portals is the opening up of their APIs to external application develop- ers. For example, the Facebook Platform, Google Gadgets and Yahoo! Widgets allow developers to design their own applications, which can then can be integrated with the platform and shared with other users. However, current APIs are targeted towards develop- ers with programming expertise and database knowledge; they are not accessible to a large class of users who do not have a programming/database background, but would nevertheless like to create new applications. To address this need, we have developed the AppForge system, which provides a WYSIWYG application development platform. Users can graphically specify the components of webpages inside a Web browser, and the corresponding database schema and application logic will be automatically generated on the fly by the system.
The WYSIWYG interface gives instantaneous feedback on what users have created and allows them to run, test and continuously refine their applications. AppForge has been used to create prototype versions of a variety of applications such as an event planning system, a recruiting system, an item trading system and an online course management system. We have also conducted a small and preliminary user study to identify and fix some of the usability aspects of AppForge.
As the world moves towards Web 2.0, there is an increasing need to leverage webpages as computing platforms that can enable users to build their own applications. For example, in Facebook and Yahoo!
